Today we’d like to introduce you to Rochelle Jones.
Hi Rochelle, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I began my career path at 19 years old! Funny story actually… I went to a cosmetology school because my friend wanted to do nails but was afraid of going to the interview alone so me being me, I went to support her…then boom I ended up signing up for school as well.
2009 my first hair/styling job I worked as a shampoo girl in Downtown Detroit! The salon was so beautiful and super busy! I made great money however I was treated like crap! My boss made sure I got lunch but that was only because he wanted me to get his honestly. Working as a salon shampoo girl taught me the needs and outs of how to run a salon business inventory front desk customer service etc
Also working there definitely helped me to understand how to treat my assistant! I vowed to never treat my assistant the way I was treated. I wanted to work at the salon as a stylist but the boss constantly told me no! So, I needed to do what was best for me so I quit in return the boss thought he fired me go figure right 😩😂
2010 I began working at a local barbershop
I’m downtown mt clemens…and boy oh boy I had some of the funniest toughest times there 😂
Mid-2013 I began working as a my own boss in yet another barbershop environment. It was very much out of my element environment wise but being young I rolled with it. Until I couldn’t anymore….
2015 I rented a chair at an upscale salon! The best experience ever! I watched a functional salon run successfully. Learning How important Front desk staff is.
Not even a full year into being at the salon I lost the most important person to me my mother! She passed away Jan 13, 2016 my world crumbled!
Took me weeks seemed like months to go back to work but in reality, I was back in three weeks to work.
Now I had tons of responsibilities I never had before. My sisters were 12 & 7 when my mom passed, so now being the eldest I automatically step up.
Few months in 2016 I become engaged/2017 married
Purchase our very first home
We have our first daughter
Things are Going well
Fast forward to 2021, we have another daughter
And we have accumulated a few properties by now husband obtained his real estate license which led us to becoming landlords. Fix and flip team.
I currently own almost 1500 sq salon in Clinton twp! I can finally say yes, I’m hiring! Yes, the environment is amazing and I love it here ❤️
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Never been smooth! At least not for me
It’s very challenging to get people to trust you and to see what you’re capable of when they won’t let you try.
Each phase in my life has been so different compared to the next that I have been unprepared each time.
However, being unprepared actually for me helped me become more aware of what I actually need
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a licensed cosmologist I specialize in color, natural hair care.
I’m very proud of my accomplishments over all the years!!!
Definitely one-of-a-kind stylist from customer service to our bond and support that our staff has. I pride myself on having and providing a nice quality service
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My mom was my biggest supporter! She was my very first receptionist! My clients loved her even more than me sometimes lol
My friends who came to me in my mom’s kitchen lol
I have some clients that been with me 11+ years I thank god for them! They have truly watched me grow! I love all my clients I couldn’t do any of this without you’re support
I have to thank my husband for being my rock! Always reminding me it will be worth it…
Lastly, I have to thank my mother-in-law who came in my life and just loved me like her own! Providing a safe place for me and always helping in any way possible with my salon!
I love you guys
