Meet Ricky Powers IV

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricky Powers IV.

Hi Ricky, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I grew up in Lansing, Mi. I’ve been writing Rap lyrics, since the time I’ve learned how to write. I quickly turned it into an outlet. It’s where I go to escape, and it’s how I express myself freely. When I started writing, I never used a beat. They were more like stories in poem form. When QZR Dobson, Murrel, and I, first started to get to know each other, we didn’t realize, each of us would push each other to the next level. I began understanding the importance of the beat, tempo, flow, song structure, and everything that makes Rap music.

I moved out of my mom’s house at 17, and we recorded our first track, in an abandoned house, with no idea how to really engineer, soundproof, or anything. We went on to make a couple more songs while in college, but for the most part, it was more of a long break from making music. One by one, we all came back to our calling. Quazar became our new home. And we are responsible for keeping it held up. Each of us taking on responsibilities out of our comfort zones in order to ensure its stability.

In short, I am who I am today, because of the push I get from each member of Quazar.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I went to Eastern Michigan University, majoring in Music Therapy. I dropped out after just one year, after seeing my debts climb into 5 digits. I’ve essentially been working 60 hr. weeks in a factory for the past 6 years, trying to balance work, music, family, friends, and financial responsibilities.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Honestly, I just make music that I want to listen to. If I’m happy with it when I leave the studio and want to listen to it, then I have succeeded. If no one listens to my music but I love it, I still did what I set out to do.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Even though I use Writing as an outlet, sometimes, I need something else. When I have writer’s block, or I’m burnt out on writing, I will typically play Rocket League on my Ps5.
