Meet Rebecca Laurie of The Beauty Boost Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Laurie.

Hi Rebecca, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The Beauty Boost Detroit is a community focused on helping women feel empowered, healthy, and beautiful through wellness, fitness, and meaningful connection. While The Beauty Boost as a whole has been around for over 10 years, starting in Columbus, Ohio and now expanding to more than 34 cities nationwide. I actually didn’t know it existed until last May. Looking back now, though, it feels like every step of my journey was leading me here.

I got engaged in 2014, married in 2015, and had my son in April of 2016. Around the time I got engaged, I purchased the Tone It Up nutrition plan and started doing their workouts through DVDs and YouTube videos, which definitely ages me a little! But fitness and movement have always been incredibly important to me, especially for my mental health. I played basketball in college and have always lived an active lifestyle.

After becoming a mom, I remember feeling ready to reconnect with myself again. In late 2016, Tone It Up launched their app and hosted monthly fitness challenges. One thing they encouraged women to do was create accountability Instagram accounts and connect through hashtags like #TIUMichigan. That simple idea completely changed my life.

Through Instagram, I started meeting other women in Michigan who were doing the same workouts, navigating similar seasons of life, and looking for connection too. What started as random meetups and workouts turned into genuine friendships and a real community. Eventually, some of us began organizing larger events together, including a Galentine’s-style event before COVID with around 70 women, multiple workouts, and a social afterward.

Even after COVID shifted everything and many of us drifted away from the Tone It Up platform itself, the friendships remained. That experience taught me just how powerful community can be, especially during motherhood and the chaos of trying to balance taking care of everyone else while not losing yourself in the process.

Then last May, a woman I had met through that community posted about attending the Cincinnati Fitness Sampler hosted by The Beauty Boost. I immediately thought, “What in the world is this?!” I started following their page, and when I saw they were hosting another event in September, I convinced my older sister to go with me.

Honestly, it was such an incredible experience. I left feeling the exact same emotional high I used to feel after those early fitness meetups years ago, energized, inspired, connected, and genuinely happy. It made me realize how much I had been missing community and connection in my own life.

When I got home, I started researching The Beauty Boost and realized I had the opportunity to bring it to Metro Detroit and create that same experience for other women here.

What makes this story even more meaningful to me is that the day I was supposed to have my discovery call with The Beauty Boost, I had just found out I was miscarrying and was scheduled for a D&C. It was an incredibly difficult and emotional time, and I had to really ask myself whether I wanted to pursue this dream or step away from it altogether.

Ultimately, I decided to move forward and pour myself into building something positive, uplifting, and fulfilling, not just for myself, but for other women too. Creating spaces where women can connect, support one another, prioritize their wellness, and discover local women-owned businesses has become so much bigger than I ever imagined.

The Beauty Boost Detroit has truly become one of the most fulfilling parts of my life, and for the first time in a long time, I genuinely feel like I’m doing exactly what I’m meant to be doing.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I think anytime you take a leap into something you believe in deeply, it’s scary. You’re constantly questioning yourself and wondering if other people will believe in the vision too.

There have been so many challenges along the way, finding venues, building partnerships, getting people to trust a brand that was brand new to Metro Detroit, and honestly learning to trust and believe in myself through the process. On top of that, I’m balancing this while working full-time and being a mom, which can feel overwhelming at times. There are definitely moments where I feel like I’m trying to show up for everyone all at once.

But even through the stress and uncertainty, I can see what we’re building. I see women walking into events alone and leaving with new friendships. I see local women-owned businesses making connections and growing. I see women prioritizing themselves again, sometimes for the first time in a long time.

That makes every hard moment worth it. Building something meaningful takes a lot of work, but it’s also been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Beauty Boost Detroit ?
The Beauty Boost Detroit is a women’s wellness and lifestyle community focused on helping women feel empowered, healthy, beautiful, and connected. We host fitness, wellness, social, and empowerment events throughout Metro Detroit that are designed to bring women together in real life, whether they come alone, with friends, or are simply looking for community.

What makes The Beauty Boost different is that it’s about so much more than fitness or wellness trends. It’s about connection. So many women are craving authentic friendships, support, and spaces where they can prioritize themselves without pressure or comparison. Our events are intentionally designed to create that feeling. We want women to walk in feeling welcomed and leave feeling energized, inspired, and connected.

Some of our signature events include large-scale experiences like The Detroit Fitness Sampler, where women can try multiple workouts in one morning while also exploring wellness and beauty experience stations from local businesses. We also host social events, wellness panels, retreats, yoga events, and networking-style experiences that highlight both physical and mental wellness.

Another huge part of what we do is support local businesses, especially women-owned businesses throughout Metro Detroit. We love creating opportunities for small businesses to connect with our audience through experiences, partnerships, and community-focused events.

What I’m most proud of is the environment we’re building. One of the most rewarding things is hearing women say they almost didn’t come because they were nervous to attend alone, but they ended up meeting new friends, discovering new businesses, or simply leaving feeling happier than when they arrived. That’s what it’s really about for me.

I want readers to know that The Beauty Boost Detroit is for every woman, whether you’re deeply into fitness and wellness already or just looking for a reason to get out of the house, meet people, and pour back into yourself a little more. Our goal is to create experiences that feel welcoming, uplifting, and genuinely inclusive for women in all stages of life.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think people are craving real, in-person connection now more than ever, and I only see that continuing to grow over the next 5–10 years. While social media has made it easier to stay connected digitally, I think a lot of people are realizing it can’t fully replace genuine community and face-to-face experiences.

In the wellness industry specifically, I think we’re going to continue seeing a shift away from unrealistic “perfect wellness” culture and more toward balance, mental health, community, and overall well-being. Women want experiences that feel approachable, supportive, and uplifting, not intimidating.

I also think experiential events are going to become even more important. People don’t just want to buy products or services anymore; they want to feel connected to brands, businesses, and communities. That’s why wellness events that combine movement, self-care, education, and social connection resonate so deeply.

Another shift I see is the continued growth of supporting local and women-owned businesses. Consumers care more about who they’re supporting and want authentic relationships with the brands and businesses they interact with.

What excites me most is that wellness is becoming less about appearance and more about how you feel, mentally, emotionally, and physically. I think communities and businesses that lead with authenticity, inclusivity, and genuine connection are going to continue thriving.
