Meet Rebecca Dexter of Lowell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Dexter.

Hi Rebecca, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I actually got my start in video production when I was just 15. My high school had an incredible media program that I’m still so grateful for — we did live daily news broadcasts, produced commercials, filmed sports events, and even dabbled in creative filmmaking.

I initially went to Michigan State University to study social work, with hopes of becoming a therapist. But two years — and a few government policy classes — in, I realized my heart was still in video. So I made a pretty major pivot and graduated with a degree in Media Arts & Technology. Even before I finished school, I was filming EDM concerts, bar events, and eventually weddings. That led to working full-time as a wedding filmmaker and editor. From 2012 to 2018, I was filming 20+ weddings a year, editing full time, and had just had my first kiddo.

Around this time, I took a step back and realized I wanted something different — something that felt more aligned with who I was and how I wanted to connect with people. I took a year off to manage a close friend’s floral and event planning business, which gave me a fresh perspective on entrepreneurship and creative collaboration.

Then in March of 2020 — yes, right before the world shut down — I officially launched my own business. It was a wild time to start, but it also taught me a lot about resilience, adaptability, and the kind of work that really matters to me. Now, I focus on capturing and preserving memories, telling meaningful brand stories, and creating space for people to feel seen and celebrated in front of the camera.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. For me, my mental health journey and running a business are really connected. One of the biggest reasons I wanted to work for myself was to have more control over my boundaries and my time. I used to carry a lot of anxiety and guilt around feeling like there just weren’t enough hours in the day — like I was always behind. Owning my own business has helped shift that. I love being able to set the pace, work in a way that feels right for me, and stay client-focused without burning myself out (or at least attempting not to, haha).

One of the biggest challenges — and probably always will be — is keeping personal boundaries in check. As a mom, wife, and friend, it’s important to me that my business is something that adds to my life, not takes it over. I’m still learning how to balance it all, but building a business that supports both my clients and my own well-being is something I’m really proud of.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in wedding and event videography, as well as branding films and content creation for small businesses and fellow creatives. What I’m most known for is capturing moments in a way that feels genuine, emotional, and full of personality — whether that’s a wedding day or a behind-the-scenes look at someone doing what they love.

One of the things I’m really excited about lately is working with other wedding pros — planners, florists, designers — to create content that shows them in action. I’ll come to an event and film the process of them doing their thing, from setting up the space to final touches. It allows the couple’s videographer to stay focused on the couple, while the vendors still get beautiful, polished content for their own socials and marketing. It’s been such a rewarding niche to grow into, because I know firsthand how hard it is to get quality behind-the-scenes content when you’re busy working an event.

Outside of weddings, I also do branding work — everything from curated photo shoots for small business owners to brand films and ongoing content creation for corporate clients who want to elevate their social media presence. I love working with people who are passionate about what they do and helping them tell their story in a way that feels really true to them.

I want my clients to feel comfortable and seen, and I’m always thinking about how the content I create can serve them beyond just looking pretty — it should move people, build connection, and tell a story.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Authenticity, for sure.

I’ve never been great at pretending to be anything I’m not — and honestly, I think that’s been one of the biggest keys to my success. I wear my heart on my sleeve, I’m open about who I am and what I believe, and I care way more about who someone is than what they do. I’m not the most polished person in the room — you might get a swear word, a typo, or a rogue all-caps text — but you’ll always get the real me, and my whole heart in everything I do.

I show up fully for my clients because I know how powerful it is to feel seen and safe. That’s something I had to learn for myself, and now it’s a huge part of how I work. I think when people feel like they can just be themselves around me, that’s when the best stuff happens — on camera and off.
