Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca and Gary Bredow.
Hi Rebecca and Gary, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Founders Rebecca and Gary Bredow purchased the building in 2014 with the intention of opening a salon that put the stylist first. Rebecca got her cosmetology license when she was 19, opened her first salon in Cherry Hill Village at 24 and in 2014 saw an opportunity to own a salon, and a piece of history on Woodward Ave. Fern & Dale’s Salon, previously Helena’s Salon is one of Metro Detroits oldest women owned businesses, operating from the 1940’s to 2013. Today the salon operates with independent contractors each running their own business within the salon, think salon suites but in a traditional salon atmosphere. Stylists Lola Woods, Kate Reynolds and Lynn Garza are the heart and soul of Fern & Dale’s and we wouldn’t be here without them. Active in the community and receiving several awards for best holiday decorations, Fern & Dale’s remains a well known and respected business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
From flooring nightmares, to roof leaks, to a global pandemic, to having several stylists poached by someone who we trusted, owning a small business is never a smooth road, but we persevered. New floor, new roof and a loyal group of stylists that are literally like family. The challenges are what make us grow as people and we wouldn’t take back one single thing.

We are a hair salon. We specialize in all aspects of hair care and make up. Our stylists each specialize in various service such as color and curly hair. What sets us apart is our commitment to our stylists autonomy and independence. While we are one of many salons in Ferndale, we believe that we stand out by providing a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere with a nod to the history behind Helena’s Salon.

Rebecca: Playing with my moms beauty school kit.
Gary: Walking up early in the summer to go on a camping vacation.
