Meet Rachel West of Malie Therapeutic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel West.

Hi Rachel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started off Malie Therapeutic in a small back room of a hair salon in Waterford, MI when I was 20 years old. It was loud and busy and not the best place to start a quiet massage business. Regardless, I loved my small room and poured everything I had into it. Passion, love, effort, and time turned it into my favorite place to be. I started with zero clients! I didn’t have a sign out by the road or anywhere on the building really for people to be able to find me. I got my clients through social media. I made a Facebook. Instagram, Google, and Linked In account and went to work. I stayed consistent every single week, posting myself and my work to build a following. I grew up in Lake Orion my whole life, and shortly after getting engaged, I realized I needed to be closer to home for my future children. After two moves, my business is now in Oxford. I’m working with a full-time clientele, and I even had to hire another therapist. In just a year and a half my business has completely exploded, and I will be expanding, getting a sign on the road, and getting two more rooms to hold more therapists in September of 2022. All of this came from social media and word of mouth! All of my business moves are based off of my intuition as well as bouncing ideas off of my family at home. They’ve been such a huge support system, extremely encouraging and helping in any way they can. I’m so proud of how far my small business has come and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Starting off with the noise of the hair salon, which was a minor issue that many people didn’t seem to mind. When I moved to my second location, the air conditioning went out for a good chunk of the summer! (Props to my clients who stuck through that, it was a major struggle!) Then when I moved to my current location (605 S Lapeer Road Oxford, MI) a semi-truck ran into our building not even a month after I moved in. Looking back on all of this seems extremely chaotic, but I just took it one day at a time and got through it!

We’ve been impressed with Malie Therapeutic, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We pride ourselves in specializing in Neuromuscular Cupping Therapy. Not many people in our area provide Cupping, and we love using it in our practice. We focus on helping clients with pain relief and trying to increase their range of motion. We love solving problems and getting to the bottom of any question or problem a client may have. We offer a wide range of services, which is why I like to call us your “One-stop shop”. We have massage, hot stones, cupping, facials, chemical peels, lash lift and tints, dermaplaning, waxing, and more. Something that sets us apart from other spas is that we have a service called “The Malie Getaway”. This is a service that includes both a full body massage and full facial without having to even get off the table. Personally, I have both my Massage Therapy License, and my Esthetician License so I am the only one who provides this service.

What matters most to you? Why?
Our clients matter the most to me. That’s what this has been all about! Being able to help people feel better, getting to the root of their problems so they can live their day-to-day without pain.
