Meet Quincy Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Quincy Lewis.

Quincy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My podcasting career started in the attic of my parent’s house. After the urging of friends, I created an account with Blog Talk Radio, an ancient podcasting platform. I used an old, slow Dell computer, and a Metro PCS flip phone, and the journey began. From there, I went from a 30-minute audio-only podcast to what we have today. I have a strong team of friends who have helped along this journey, including my co-hosts, Angry Man and Monk Money, and for them, I am thankful. Since then, I have created a Podcast Network of diverse podcasts that I produce. The network now generates ad revenue, sponsorship, and merchandise profits, while providing a home for creative podcasters who look like me. While podcasting is booming, there is still a small percentage of black podcasters represented on the large scale, and with the E-Block Radio Podcast Network, I am looking to forge a path for others like myself. The network is currently home to eight podcasts, including the flagship show, E-Block Radio’s Wake and Bake Show. Our next step is to continue the growth of our audience which has over 20,000 downloads this year, and catch the ears and eyes of a distributor like Black Effect, iHeart Radio, or Spotify.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. The most challenging thing is keeping up with technology. The audio and visual equipment industry is ever evolving and in order to create the best content, we need to evolve with it, and of course, that costs money. Thanks to ad revenue and investors, we’ve been able to keep up with the equipment evolution but definitely had some financial obstacles to overcome to get where we are today. Now our biggest struggle is breaking into a larger market, but with the help of organizations like The Plug Podcast Network and the Afros and Audio Podcast Conference, I am hopeful to make a bigger push this year.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a podcast producer and the owner of the E-Block Radio Podcast Network. I currently produce 9 podcasts for various creators, seven of which are on my network. I specialize in bringing black voices to the world in the arena of podcasting. Showing the youth in the neighborhood I grew up in that content creation, entrepreneurship, and media are attainable goals and providing them with access to information that wasn’t available to us when we started. I am proud to have won an award in 2019 for being the “Next to Blow” at the Pod Excellence Awards in Charlotte, NC. However, I am most proud of recently having a cameo appearance in a movie production. This was exciting because our podcast will now be on the big screen soon! What sets me apart from other network owners and producers is that not only do I produce LIVE shows, but I’ve also mastered the connection between podcasts and social media marketing. This is a concept that a lot of content creators fall short and I have used to my advantage.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
As a kid growing up in the 48205-zip code of Detroit, I saw a lot of things kids weren’t supposed to see. Drugs, violence, alcoholism, and incarceration, all the sad realities of a lot of young black inner-city youth. I was lucky enough to have both parents in the household but even more lucky to have a circle of friends who were strong enough to withstand the lure of the streets and find alternative routes to our end goals of success. As a youngster though, I was charismatic, always joking and trying to find the bright spot in every situation. A lot of that personality is what makes me a dynamic podcast producer. Coming up, I was always a big guy, so I thought football was going to be my future. After playing at Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School, I was excited, but then after going to Adrian College and never seeing the field, I realized football was not for me…lol. During my college career, I did an internship at Black Enterprise Magazine, which is where I fell in love with the idea of the field of communications and entrepreneurship
