Today we’d like to introduce you to Nazish Azam.
Hi Nazish, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
My name is Nazish Azam. I am a licensed Cosmetologist from Detroit, Michigan. I have been a Hairstylist for about twelve years now. I am successfully running my business, NazStylez, as a freelance Cosmetologist. Growing up, I always had interest in working in the beauty industry. For family events, I loved doing makeup for family members and helped doing their hair. It always fascinated me to watch the professionals create their magic whenever I visited salons. It wasn’t until I was done with high school when I really started to consider working towards making a profession out of it. After researching and visiting various beauty schools in Michigan, I chose Michigan College of Beauty (Pivot Point Member), where I received the best training to enhance my skills and learned amazing techniques. I have been licensed since 2010. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of working with great fellow stylists and had the chance to learn incredible skills, tips, and tricks which helped me grow in this business.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Achieving the license was not the difficult part; it’s what I chose to do with it. Over the years, I have worked at franchise-based salons and full-service salons. During that time, I had the opportunity to do hair for couple of international celebrities when they held their concerts in Michigan. While working in the salons, I started to love doing wedding services. That is when I started to freelance in my available times for weddings, bridal parties, and events. In the start, it was a little difficult as I was going to the venues to perform beauty services, but over time it became easy for me to create schedules, manage my time between clients, and being proficient. In the initial years, I had clientele solely based on ‘word of mouth’. I have worked my way up by acknowledging my niche, and I strive to provide those services at the best of my abilities. I have learned to be equipped and prepared for all that would be required to perform a service. It certainly has taken me a while to create and provide a name to my business, but I finally am where I had once dreamt to be. Now I am continuing to have clients based on exposure of my work through my own social media and fellow people from wedding businesses. It is never easy creating your own path; you are always faced with unexpected struggles, but by keeping faith in my vision and by accepting failures to strive better has helped me get to where I am today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Throughout the years, I’ve gained knowledge and experience in every aspect of cosmetology, but I have always had an immense interest in hairstyling, especially when it comes to special events, such as weddings and celebratory functions. I am known as a Traveling Bridal Stylist, and I get to style brides, bridesmaids, and their family members. When I started to freelance, I learned quickly that timing is essential for the brides and their families on the big day, and traveling to them would be a convenience that needed to be provided. I am known for providing my services to the people of the South Asian community. Most times, they require not just the makeup or hairstyling but also the pinning of heavily embroidered veil and extravagant jewelry setting, in which case I also provide to my customers at their request. In this line of work, there is no set schedule for when to start or finish, and sometimes, I’ve started my appointments before sunrise. Being part of someone’s special day is what makes me love what I do, and seeing the brides happy with their looks make all the hard work pay off.
We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking.
Although I am not a big risk taker, any change you want to bring in your life requires taking risks. When I decided to start my freelance cosmetology business, I had no knowledge about the industry, which direction to take, or what to expect. After working at a few salons and experiencing that side of the field, I took the initiative to start expanding my abilities. I would advertise myself through the salons I worked at and would showcase my work at some of the community events for exposure. I started to gain more traction in my personal work as time went on, and I have not looked back since. Deciding to start my own business has been one of the best decisions I have made. You never know what you can accomplish until you take that step forward. I didn’t expect myself to be where I am today, however, there is still a long way for me to improve as I continue to expand my horizons in this industry.
