Meet Montrelle Green of VELVET Wax and Beauty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Montrelle Green. Them and their team share their story with us below:

After the death of her parents, both entrepreneurs and ambitious creatives, Montie founded VELVET Wax and Beauty, a Full Body Waxing & Sugaring studio in Hampton, VA and Alexandria, VA. As a student at Howard University, Montie performed beauty care services out of her dorm room and always wanted to empower women to live healthy and beautifully. She endeavored in self-care, years before it was a trending hashtag. Montie worked as a makeup artist, a beauty freelancer for Madame Noire, Essence, and Styleblazer, and eventually decided that spa ownership is truly where her heart is. When COVID hit, she revamped her business model, grew her platform, and kicked her business and personal care journey into high gear. 

Today, VELVET is a team of 7 and creates unique hair removal experiences for men and women. Her company also has a divine spread of skincare products to support the pre-and post-hair removal process as well as at-home self-care experience. 

Montie is passionate about her faith in God, and building meaningful relationships with friends, family and clients. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think traveling the narrow road is the least desirable but most rewarding. My journey has not been easy but, every experience has been extremely impactful. Managing the death of my parents, followed by years of family adversity and financial difficulty was the fire needed to make my like into the diamond that it is. Today, I can say that I have has some of the most phenomenal women, many black women, serve as mentors, supervisors, and advocates for my success. Managing a full-time job in addition to a growing business during COVID have taught me the meaning of perseverance and adaptation. Hiring and building a team and giving back to local entrepreneurs has been my new passion; continuing to lift as I climb.

Velvet Wax and Beauty was founded in May 2014 as a full body waxing and sugaring studio with one goal in mind: To make men and women feel like they have skin so smooth, they think it’s VELVET. 

Since opening its doors in Historic Downtown Hampton, VA in March 2016, VELVET has served thousands of men and women’s hair removal and skincare needs. VELVET prides itself on sourcing high-quality products and training our team on techniques which prioritize comfort, pain tolerance and patience to ensure you the most comfortable hair removal experience possible. VELVET also endeavors to uplift the community of women we serve through education. By partnering with Sweet & True Sugaring, Co, a minority product manufacturer based in Walnut Creek, CA, VELVET trains beauty professionals how to have lucrative and inspiring careers in hair removal. 

Today, VELVET has two locations; one in Hampton, VA and another in Alexandria, VA. In Spring 2022, VELVET will launch VELVET The Experience: a Mobile Waxing Studio that also promotes local businesses in unique event activation experiences.

When I founded Velvet Wax and Beauty in May 2014, I did so based out of a love for beauty and a desire to create something bigger than myself. Women inspire me each and every day to do things many think and feel are impossible.
