Meet Miranda Coombs of Montague, MI

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miranda Coombs

Hi Miranda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My family and I moved to Michigan from Alaska back in 2017. We wanted a change of scenery, and previously being in the military we had moved around a lot. We wanted a fresh start at a new place!
I had always really enjoyed coffee and had dreams of opening a coffee shop/bakery most of my adult life. When I was young I helped my mother work in a local bakery in my hometown and learned a lot from her, as I got older I acquired a love for coffee and espresso. I had previous jobs working in the food service industry as a waitress and a barista so I learned along the way and picked up useful skills.
In 2022 I had the opportunity to rent a small space at the local Artisan Market Village here in Montague to test out the idea of opening a small coffee shop. I poured my entering savings into it, crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. I ended the season well above and beyond my expectations. I had massive support from the community and went over every financial projection. I made enough in sales that one summer that I was able to open a brick & mortar cafe the following year with an expanded menu and large indoor dining area. It’s definitely been a wild ride and I’ve learned a lot but this has been an amazing experience! I couldn’t do what I love without the love and support of family & friends, they have encouraged and supported me though this every step of the way.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s for sure been a struggle. I don’t come from a business background so I’ve had to learn a lot as I went. Luckily I have good friends and mentors in my life who have helped me on this journey, I also have an amazing staff that all work super hard right along side me. Some months are worse than others because we are such a seasonal area but we are rolling with the punches.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love to get creative with our coffee and drink menu! I’m constantly coming up with new flavor combinations, we change out the specials for different holidays and different seasons of the year. That’s what I love the most about owning my own coffee shop, I have the freedom to make up and create things that other places don’t do.

What matters most to you?
Customer service is top priority for me, we want people to come back. I love to see our “regulars” and remembering their orders every time. It puts a big smile on their faces but it also puts a smile on my face that they enjoy coming in. It makes me feel like I’m doing something good and making their day better.
My staff is also matters a lot to me. I always want them to know they’re appreciated and cared for and WANT to come to work. I couldn’t do any of this without them.
