Meet Mikel James Watkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikel James Watkins.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started writing songs young, like 4 or 5 in old comp books. I still write in comp books today. I started writing to escape my feelings and my pain pretty much I was going to be a fiction writer; as time grew, I got into making music and beats, and I found my voice and went to college for it out in Arizona I attended the conservatory of recording arts and sciences, and that’s where I discovered my brand as an artist and person which is HUMAN the most flawed organism, and I’m okay with that.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road for me; I have overcome a lot of failures disappointments and lost a bunch of friends because of my art and mental health. I push people away when I’m creating and when I’m down and out because I feel that I am unworthy of the love or praise I receive. Not feeling good enough and even my physical health feeling like I have to fit this image that the world pushes on creatives and free thinkers alike. Once I learned to tune out the bullshit, I become who I was supposed to be, and I truly believe that is a person who helps “burnouts” or lost causes like I was at one point. Just to let people know that they are not alone in their thoughts and it’s okay to have flaws JUST BE YOU.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer-songwriter, producer, audio engineer, father, and human. What sets me apart from most is that I have embraced my mental health and created my brand around from my bears to my writing style it is that of an unsure bipolar kid which I am. With my simple song titles and my constant irrational thoughts and fears that constantly switch my moods.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Can’t Never Could and Live How you want to
