Meet Melody Minx

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Minx.

Hi Melody, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Where I am today is such a random mishmosh of interests & hobbies. Nowhere near where I thought I’d be. I started my college career in aeronautical engineering because I wanted to be an astronaut. Then jumped to archeology to verify if I reeeeeeally wanted to be Indiana Jones. But I ended up falling into broadcast journalism on a whim. I overcame a life-long, almost primal fear of public speaking to being voted “Best Anchor” in the class & later speaking in front of crowds as big as 20k. I, once again, fell into radio because all the course internships at the TV stations were already taken. Thankfully, I loved it. Thus began a 20+ year career in radio DJing, voice-over work & hosting/MCing events. I have since DJed a variety of radio genres from hard rock to Sinatra; hosted a plethora of events & radio, TV, internet shows & podcasts & done all manner of voice-over for organizations big & small. & I’m about to voice a cartoon character (a life goal of mine!). I’m in a position now to be a part of, start, or be the catalyst for gigs, events, shows that combine or have part of some of my loves – music, travel, nerdy things like Star Trek, food (especially brunch), history & inspiring people to think just a wee bit outta the box. Life is good!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can judge myself to oblivion as far as decisions made, time wasted & opportunities lost. But I truly think I’m where I’m supposed to be. Overarchingly, struggles stemmed from getting in my own way. I can think of a couple instances in my early radio career where I was kind of waiting for my value to be seen. I wasn’t putting a voice to it myself & asking for what I wanted deep down. And I was/am quite good at not seeing or jumping on random opportunities that have presented themselves, being blind to them completely, or procrastinating away the invisible timeline. Self-sabotage is definitely a thing. A thing I do not recommend taking part in, though, it’s a fabulous teacher -when your eyes are finally opened to it.

I’ve been asked if the media “boys club” has been an obstacle. Well, it’s there. It exists, especially in rock radio – the sidekick or midday slot is often the high point for women (& we generally make substantially less). But if you really want something (& you’ve got some amount of talent), it’s surmountable. Or at least it was for me & where I wanted to go.

Jeeeeez, this sounds so dour. I’ve enjoyed it, I swear!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am living that gig life, atm. I’m a voice-over artist. I’m a host/mc-for-hire. I plan & execute my own events. I’m a radio DJ contractor on stations in small markets in various states. I am a small business social media consultant & manager. I’ll be kicking off an internet show hosting gig soon that is combining my love of travel & of days gone by & reclaiming & revitalizing historical bridges. It’s called “Bridge Huntin’.” Be on the lookout for it & find us on the socials!!! Yup, I’m a lover of travel & get in as much as I can, whether business or pleasure. I love history & quirk, whether in travel locales, verbiage, or attire. I love cosplay & have MCed at the Star Trek Con small stage. I have a multitude of outfits for all manner of things – Star Trek, Star Wars, Burning Man, 40s & 50s vintage, etc. I am definitely known for adding an element of ensemble panache or straight-out costuming for almost any event. I say elements of play are vital to a healthy mindset. So, get out & LIVE whenever you can. One thing I’m proud of is making a difference in my community. I am thrilled when I hear that someone adopted a dog or gave to a shelter or tried something new or was overtly kind or took a class in something new due to an idea I shared on-air or on the socials, etc. I try to incorporate an element of inspiration to almost everything I do. If I’m posting about traveling to Portugal, I will always give some history & then state something about “you can do it, too” or give pointers on how to accomplish it. Every station I’ve been on, I always give random, helpful facts & a little fortune cookie wisdom each day. I try to use my socials to benefit the community. When I volunteer somewhere, I’ll give info on how to follow suit or give info on other volunteer or give-back opportunities. I also try to have some sort of charitable aspect to my events & offer that opportunity to the organizations that I work for. I think inspiring individuals, organizations, leaders, etc., to do a wee bit better in some way is an integral part of societal & cultural improvement.

All the aforementioned qualities set me apart. But so does my attitude. I’m a chipper person who likes to spread that everywhere. & I’m a fabulous bridge. I inadvertently & deliberately connect friends, associates, clients, etc.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Though many of my gigs are swimming in the tech field, I’m decidedly not. HA! My app usage is limited to using socials that keep me connected to my family, friends, followers, fans & clients & then when traveling, I ALWAYS check atlasobscura.com or roadsideamerica.com for quirky things to see & do. I do loooove books, though. Real, in-hand, smells-like-the-library books! I’m in a couple book clubs as I type. One for fluff & one for my spirit.

Wow, what an interesting life/story. She sure should like a well rounded individual who loves life and traveling. Sort of old fashion (loving REAL books) yet out there putting people and things together. AND, love those pictures.

Thank you Voyage Michigan for such a fun loving and upstanding interview. Keep up the good work.
