Today we’d like to introduce you to Melaika Taylor.
Hi Melaika, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started doing Locs in 2018, what started as a curiosity quickly turned into a passion. I got into doing Locs because I used to see people out and their hair just didn’t look all that appealing to me and I felt I could do a better job, whole time I knew nothing about doing Locs lol but I was intrigued. My stylist at the time was willing to teach me for free so I took the opportunity and fell in love. I picked up on the skill pretty quick and built an amazing clientele who still to this day supports me tremendously. For years I worked under somebody else, constantly learning and picking up on different information and enhancing my skills but just recently I decided to branch off and get my own salon. I am now currently flourishing and looking for more ways to put myself out there, always open to accepting new clients and building relationships in the loc community.! I truly love what I do, this isn’t a Job for me, it’s a passion and lifestyle
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part it has been a smooth ride as far as learning and building a rapport in the community. I would say the only challenges I have had were working under someone else and feeling like I couldn’t truly be myself and market and grow my business the way I would have liked to. I’ve also had to deal with others ego and jealousy getting in the way of my growth
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in all Loc care needs. Starter Locs, two strand twists, color, crocheting Locs, different types of styles.. anything you can name I can do. I am most proud of my styling and neatness of how everything turns out. I feel what sets me apart from other loticians is the fact I am fluent all around when it comes to Locs, I also make sure I am myself at all times but still remain professional. I’m always open to learning and teaching the craft to anyone that’s willing to learn. My clients have become my family and I truly love how they look and feel once they leave my chair. I build confidence and make everyone look amazing
How do you define success?
I define success by being consistent and doing the work needed to be done. Putting yourself out there and executing exactly what you say you are going to do. Success to me is having clients excited to come to your chair and even more excited to be a walking billboard getting compliments as they are out enjoying life
