Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Scott.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Let’s see… once upon a time, there was a little boy that went to a Lutheran grade school (1-8), that played another Lutheran grade school in sports, where a little girl attended for grades 1-8, as well. Although they didn’t know each other, they were both sending their allowance money to the World Wildlife Fund and to adopt their respective manatees (Flash, Dana) in Florida. Freshman year, both attended Lutheran Highschool Westland… where they would never speak, never become friends, participate in completely different drama productions that year, and never have their paths cross. Rob would move to Florida, shortly thereafter, and we fast forward 25+ years. After another excellent story, the couple connects via facebook… marry within 5 months of connecting… and move from the 46th floor of a highrise apartment in downtown Chicago with two senior dogs, to a 40 acre farm with 28+ rescue farm animals… living the dream!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I will be honest, practicing law in these rural districts is a very different experience. In downtown Chicago, you can’t throw a stick without hitting another attorney (and promptly being sued for assault and battery). I am sure that most professions experience this, to some extent, but practicing in such an isolated environment presents specific challenges to productivity, collaboration, innovation, and temperment… which I battle every day.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about My Scott Law PLLC/Amnesty Freedom Farm?
I think the thing that sets us apart is that we offer so much in one location. We have Amnesty Freedom Farm, which is a farm rescue that hosts field trips, tours, and serves as a ‘forever farm’ for our animal residents. My Scott Law PLLC is our private law practice that serves Manistee County and beyond, as I am licensed to practice law in Michigan and Illinois. Soon, we will have Amnesty Freedom Fit, a gym in our hay mow where I can run group fitness classes and offer personal training (I am ACE certified in both). We will also have a ‘summer shop’ where we can sell our local produce, Meg’s Mulch, things that I have canned in our canning kitchen, hand knit washcloths, etc. We are working on volunteer housing for long term assistance… and still working on the nine outbuildings on the property to possibly take in additional rescue animals. Possibly a recording studio, down the line, so that my husband can utilize his degree, as well.
Any big plans?
In 2025, we celebrated 5 years of Amnesty Freedom Farm, and in 2026, we celebrate 10 years of marriage! We are still working on the outbuildings, and hope to have volunteer housing available soon. I also hope to open Amnesty Freedom Fit, in the near future, to run group fitness classes and personal training from the hay mow of our 120 year old barn. We may also get a recording studio running for my husband to also be able to utilize his education, while on the farm. The possibilities are endless, and only limited by the bounds of our imagination.
