Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Green

Maya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Detroit, MI, and graduated from Southfield-Lathrup High School. I then attended Central Michigan University, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology, before pursuing my legal education at Florida A&M College of Law.

Since high school, I knew I wanted to become an attorney. My initial goal was to be a juvenile criminal defense attorney, advocating for underprivileged children who found themselves in difficult situations through no fault of their own. I wanted to be the support and guidance for them that many had been for me while growing up.

During law school, I gained experience in criminal law, working on cases ranging from juvenile offenses to traffic violations and even homicides. However, I quickly realized that criminal law was not the path I wanted to pursue. At the same time, I was also working as a guardian ad litem, looking after children in foster care. Through this role, I discovered that I could help the same demographic of underprivileged children in a different way—one that did not necessarily involve being their attorney.

Despite these experiences, I was still uncertain about which area of law I truly wanted to practice. During my second year of law school, my father passed away unexpectedly. This life-altering event shifted my perspective. Though many advised me to take a break, I became even more determined to finish law school—not just for myself, but for my family and everyone who had supported me.

After graduating, I took some time off before sitting for the bar exam and worked at a probate law firm. Once I passed the Michigan bar, I secured a job at a personal injury firm specializing in no-fault cases and quickly realized how much I enjoyed that area of law. Upon being sworn in, I took my first official attorney position at a probate firm, thinking I had found my long-term career path. However, I soon realized that probate law did not excite me the way personal injury law did.

I transitioned back into personal injury law, this time as an attorney, and felt like I had truly found my calling. Again, I thought I had found my forever firm. However, after a year, I made the bold decision to leave and start my own practice. I believed I had gained enough experience to stand on my own, and with the guidance of a mentor, I took a chance on myself. It was a terrifying leap, but I have never looked back. The journey has been challenging, but it has also been incredibly rewarding, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to success has not been smooth. I have had to sacrifice time, missing out on events, family gatherings, and trips. Financial struggles were a constant challenge, making it difficult to stay afloat at times. I have lost friends and even some family relationships along the way.

There were moments of failure that forced me to pick myself up and try again. At times, I felt stuck, unsure of which direction to take or whether I was making the right choices. The uncertainty was overwhelming, and I sometimes questioned whether I was on the right path.

At one point, my ego got ahead of me, and it began to block doors that were meant to open. I had to humble myself and recognize that I could not do it all on my own. I had to let go and allow God to take control, trusting that He had a greater plan for me.

Starting my firm was not just a career move—it was a calling. I had to step out on faith, despite my fears and doubts. Though the journey has been difficult, every struggle has been a lesson, shaping me into the attorney and person I am today.
