Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Beattie.
Matthew, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been in the building trades for 25 years to some degree. I was constantly chasing independence and stability while trying to support a family and find my identity. I served in the military and deployed to Iraq. I worked as an auto/equipment mechanic and worked in restaurants in about every position there is but always ended up back in the construction scene. My father worked in Plumbing/HVAC for 30 plus years and taught me how to fix things. I was lucky enough to always have the unconditional support of family and friends. Finally about 4 years ago I decided to make a go of it on my own and become my own boss. I had recently moved to Cadillac and became the Boon Township supervisor on the 2020 election. Through community interaction found the area to be underserved in the Garage Door/ Window and Door industry. That’s how Wexford Door Service and Total Door Pros was born. Through hard work and plenty of sacrifices of family time we have been growing and have done jobs across the state. We work one on one with the homeowners and contractors to customize each job to their unique needs. I am the owner and I am the one you hear on the phone and see on every job to ensure quality.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely been overwhelming at times but overall I have no regrets. Starting this business during the COVID era wasn’t easy. Materials prices went up 85% the first year while the lead times on product went from 3-4 weeks to 6 months plus in some cases. We maneuvered that situation and kept growing clientele causing our next issue, staffing. Finding people who wanted to learn a trade and grow a career was hard. Most applicants would lose interest after a short time due to the physicality of the job and having to work in the elements years round. Some even quit as soon as the first check hit. Finally I was able to find a young man who wanted to learn and support his family. He was a quick learner and as dependable as they come. I wish I could find several more like him and watch this business skyrocket.
We’ve been impressed with Wexford Door Service / Total Door Pros, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We specialize in exteriors mainly. We do siding and trims as well as Windows and entry doors. The majority of our business has been on the garage door end of both new construction and remodels. We are full service in that we will service and repair all products we sell as well as those we do not. Even if it is not purchased from us we will maintain it for you and repair/ replace it. We offer on site, free consultations and will walk you through the entire process with no obligation.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I only have a high school education. Most skills I have attained in my life have been through on the job training or self-learning/ trial and error.
