Meet Mary Myers of Butterfly Kiss Lash Boutique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Myers.

Hi Mary, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I graduated high school in 2018. After graduating, I decided to go to cosmetology school. I enrolled at Douglas J. Aveda in Royal oak. After a long year I finally graduated in the fall of 2019, I knew hair wasn’t for me but I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do. At the end of 2019, I was hired at a small blow dry bar and worked there for a few months. I was always interested in lashes, but they don’t teach you that in cosmetology school, so I decided to take a chance and get certified to do eyelash extensions. A small business in the area hired me. I worked there for about two years, from 2020 until the middle of 2022, which was frustrating and extremely difficult to build a clientele in the middle of a pandemic. I learned so quickly and became one of best stylists there. Once I had a decent amount of loyal clients, I knew I deserved better. April of 2022 made a huge decision and chose to open my own business doing eyelash extensions, with being so young I was terrified. I was afraid I was going to completely fail, but I bet on myself for the first time in my life. Although it is scary, this was the best decision I ever made. My business has now successfully been open for a little over two months.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. In 2018 I lost my mother at 17 years old. She was my world, my best friend, and my biggest supporter. Graduating high school was hard enough without her. I had totally different plans on what I was going to do as a career but once she passed, I didn’t have time to look at universities so I had to make a quick decision about what I was going to do. Finishing cosmetology school was extremely difficult mentally. Knowing this was another accomplishment she did not get to see. Once I finally decided to open my own business, I had never felt so excited yet so heartbroken before. Getting my business ready was the most stressful part. I overthought everything. I had this image in my head of how perfect my room needed to be. I was so frustrated trying to find everything I needed in time. I just needed to trust the process. Everything turned out beautifully. Since my mom could not be here, I decided to pick a name in honor of her. The name Butterfly Kiss Lash Boutique is so special to me because when I was younger me and my mom use to butterfly kiss all the time. I’ve had a lot of people tell me they’ve done the same with their kids and it makes me so happy to know that others do it too.

As you know, we’re big fans of Butterfly Kiss Lash Boutique. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is an eyelash extension salon. I specialize in lashes. I am most proud of my work ethic. I find that listening to what the client wants, letting them know I hear them and I understand, it makes them feel much more comfortable. I always do my best to achieve the look there are going for. I want readers to know that my business is more like a home. I wanted to design it to be as comfortable, safe, and welcoming to everyone that walks in my door. I treat everybody like family and I refuse to let anyone leave unsatisfied. I take so much pride in the work I do. Seeing new faces and watching them walk out happier than before is the best feeling ever. I love to make women feel beautiful and confident.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The first and most important lesson I’ve learned has definitely been to do what is best for yourself. I was always the type of person that cared so much more about everybody else that I put myself second. For the longest time, it was such a mental battle to focus on myself and to invest in myself. Once I finally learned that it’s been so much more freeing, having total control over your life and working for yourself. Take a chance and bet on yourself. You’ll be happier in the long run. The second important lesson I’ve learned is to take life one day at a time and live life to its fullest. You will never know what is going to happen throughout the day and especially after losing my mom, you never know when will be your last day. In correlation with opening my business, taking it one day at a time is very important. I became so wrapped up in making sure I had everything ready in time and I focused so much on the future. Once you take a step back, breathe and focus on what is important right now you can get so much done and with less stress.
