Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Capicchioni.
Hi Mary, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Mary Capicchioni. I am from the East Side of the Metro Detroit Area. I am 27 years old and I currently live in Detroit not too far from Old Soul Vintage.
I own and operate Old Soul Vintage. I specialize in making sure the shop is running smoothly, while also being the lead producer/director on photoshoots, styling shoots or customers, creating pop-up events, and directing our lovely shop team.
Old Soul Vintage came to be from my love of History, Fashion, Music, Art, and Community in 2014. We’ve grown immensely since then and it’s all thanks to the Detroit community, friends, family, our team, and beyond.
OSV is known for providing a sustainable, affordable place for the community to shop and be a part of. We specialize in selling vintage clothing from the 1900s-to 1990s. We are also home to 50+ local other artists and businesses that sell in the shop, making for a collective shopping experience. During the Spring through early Fall months, we provide a space where local businesses can pop up in our parking lot, ‘Sundays on Brainard. It’s very important to OSV that we are strongly connected to all in the community. Every pop-up we do outside of Brainard’s, we try to keep the flow of community by providing booth spaces for anyone who applies. We also try to be involved in the local music scene here in Detroit, as music is very important to us. For any event we do, we reach out to local bands/DJs and ask them if they’d like to be a part of the event in any way.
We’ve only been open for 2 years, so I’m not too sure of our reputation yet, But I hope we’re known for our editorials we work very hard on, alongside many other talented photogs, artists, and models. Secondly, I hope we’re known for providing a safe, fun, and affordable shopping experience in our store and at pop-ups.
OSV stands apart from the rest of our vision. We care about the community and Art very much. That is shown through our fashion editorials. We also stand out by constantly donating to local charities. Especially, I Support the Girls — Detroit and The Corktown Health center every year in November through our FTG|PTB event that aids those in need of menstrual products. Lastly, I believe we stand out because we have such a love for History. Each piece in the store holds so much value because of its history and that’s something we cherish.
Brand-wise, I am most proud of our pricing, quality, and creativeness as a team.
Readers of Voyage should know that OSV is a welcoming vintage store with many offerings. Such as local Art, handmade jewelry, clothing and so much more! We offer personal styling services and we are always welcoming new consigners to come to sell in the shop. Whether that be vintage clothing businesses, Artwork, Jewelry, etc.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
A smooth road is no such thing! Old Soul opened its doors on February 22nd, 2020 just two weeks shy of the global COVID-19 pandemic shutting us down. With COVID shutting us down so quickly, we were “prepared” for every other disaster besides that one.
We are still recovering from the economic disaster that COVID caused our small business, but with the help of the community and Grants, we’ve been able to keep afloat, and for that, we can’t be more grateful.
If opening a business was easy, anyone would do it. Though it is very stressful, it is so rewarding to build and create a beautiful space for not only our team but our shoppers.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Old Soul Vintage is a brick & mortar shop born in 2014, in Detroit, MI.
Old Soul specializes in buying and selling vintage clothing, accessories & housewares spanning the 1900s-to 1990s.
Along with our product, we are home to 50+ other local creatives/businesses that sell various items! (Clothing, Art, Home goods, and Apothecary) making the shop an eclectic place to be.
We enjoy giving back to our community and environment. We donate sales to local non-profits and host charity pop-up events for local charities in need each year.
Our main mission is to provide a sustainable, affordable, and fun place to shop for the Midtown, Detroit area, and surrounding.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was always rummaging through my grandma’s things. My grandma’s house was always a world of inspiration for me. The clothing she had, the knickknacks. All from the 20th Century. My mind would escape to a time where I was not physically, but mentally I’d be in 1967 at age 8. Not even knowing what that meant at the time. That being said, my grandma and my mother coined me the “Old Soul” of the family. My Grandma is my biggest inspiration in life. I miss her every day.
I’m a very sensitive person. I give my all to everyone and everything. I am an Artist and Aquarius, so it only makes sense.
I began painting, with my grandmother’s teachings around age 12. From then on, I went to an Art Highschool in an East Side suburb of Detroit, Fraser, called Arts Academy in the Woods. It was there that I would learn the basics of Art and completely immerse myself in everything creative. Photography, painting, 3D art, and Art History.
My interests have been the same since I could remember. My Father taught me about Rock and Roll and I don’t even think he realizes the profound impact that his teachings on music have on my life. The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin. These bands all have a shaping as to who I am today and I still listen to them with a sparkle in my eye as I did then at a young age.
I grew up with three brothers and their interests soon became my own. Hockey, Skateboarding, Music, and all the rest.
Through film (Who’s That Girl starring Madonna specifically) and my friends, I developed a love for fashion. Ripping out every page of Vogue and plastering it on my bright lime green walls. My best friend John and I would dig apart thrift stores and talk about life in the fashion world often when we were younger. Now here we are, a part of it in some way!
Last but not least, my mom is a huge inspiration in my life, most importantly. She is a hard worker in her 20+ year career and in her role as a mother of 4 children. She is my biggest support system and my dearest friend. She has instilled in me the importance of hard work and I would not have opened up a business at 24 years old if it wasn’t for her. She also raised us to give back to those who need help in times of need. Thus, my passion for giving back to local non-profits.
At 27, nothing has changed. I still love Music, Fashion, Art, and History very much. It’s everything to me.
