Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa King.
Marissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I always knew I wanted to get into hair but was extremely nervous of what everyone would say. So, I attempted community college and hated it and knew I belonged in beauty school. I started full-time when I was 20, graduated when I was 21, and then came all of the fears and doubts but then got into my first commission salon and loved it! I ended up staying there for almost 12 years before I went out on my own and got into a salon suite, and started my own business. I had an 8-month-old and was scared of failing but knew it was the best move for our family. Fast-forwarded to getting engaged to my daughter’s father in 2019 and planning a big wedding and covid busting in and putting that on hold, not working for over 3 months, and not knowing what was going to happen with my business and life in general. Once the world started coming back work has never been busier, and the wedding industry is thriving; I ended up having 2 weddings of my own, and my wedding business has never been busier, and I love every minute of it!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I knew during my maternity leave that I was ready to spread my wings and find a new salon home, after searching couldn’t find the perfect fit. Then shortly after I returned to work our salon was bought to and we had new owners and staff; then realized I needed to be on my own. Then those owners found out I wanted to leave and found myself a week before Christmas being forced out and into my new studio space before I initially planned. But it all worked out, and it’s had its ups and downs and then throw in covid, but I’ve always found a way to make the best of every curve ball thrown at me; I honestly feel like I work better in stressful situations!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I live for making people feel confident and their best selves. I’m a the owner and stylist in my studio; color, cuts, and bridal hair are my passion. I try my hardest to make everyone feel comfortable and at ease when they are in my chair/studio. I love going the extra mile for all of my guests. For the last 3 years, I’ve been an educator with GlossGenius, a very popular/stylish booking app that’s used by beauty professionals; I truly just love helping people and making them feel good. Bridal hair is how I love spending weekends; everything bridal hair, weddings, and all of the planning that goes into that brings me life. In my career, I get to be a hairstylist, boss, friend, therapist, and creator, and it truly makes me happy every day.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I definitely think the shutdown from covid helped people realize how much they value their stylists and getting their hair done and has kept us thriving more than ever, and I really think it’s going to continue like that. Guests are really realizing how much they value their hair
