Today we’d like to introduce you to Marci Taylor.
Hi Marci, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In 1997, I applied for a receptionist position at WSMK 99.1FM. Once I got hired, I was told by the owner there was no room for advancement and to use this as a stepping stone to learn all that I could and I would be able to take my experience elsewhere. Doors begin to open as I worked through various departments from receptionist to scheduling commercials, billing to promotions and sales. I became the Sales Manager in 2007, and in 2012, I became the General Manager. Who knew, that I would actually advance from the lowest to the highest position in just 13 years and still be here 25 years later.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not! There have been many challenges, as a woman in a male dominate field from coworkers stating that I didn’t have enough experience to be running a radio station, to male clients who didn’t want me to tell them how to spend their money. But that just made me want to show and prove that I was up to the challenge, as well as prove to myself and every other woman who has been in a position like this, that we are just as capable and when given a chance we’ll succeed.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As the General Manager I oversee the day-to-day operations. In this role I also, get to build relationships and meet new people and find out their journey and how they got to where they are today. Which led me to start my podcast “Women Who Boss Up” in February of 2020. “Women Who Boss Up” is a conversation about the journey of some amazing women right here in the Michiana area and how they’ve BOSSED up in their lives in order to be successful. The Boss Up conversations talk about how some of these women left the corporate world to start their own business to those who have climbed up the ranks and the barriers they have gone through. This year I’m in the process of starting my own voice over company called “We Bossy Productions”, where I get to utilize my voice to help people/businesses/
In this role I’m also able to be involved in the community and be a part of community organizations like the YMCA of Greater Michiana, the Greater Niles Chamber of Commerce, and the Berrien County Community Restorative Board, just to name a few.
I recently heard that when you step forward, make sure to reach behind and bring others with you. I’m known for being a connector. I connect people together for services and resources. I also like to encourage people to shine and bring there star level power to the next level
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Niles is a great city to live in and it continues to grow. Born and raised in Niles, I’ve see this city reinvent itself with unique businesses, festivals and it has a lot of history. You get a small town feel, and yet it’s close enough to the Indiana state line, Lake Michigan and Chicago is only a couple of hours away.
