Meet Madison Marie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Marie.

Hi Madison, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am Madison Marie Hair and I am an LGBTQ+ Independent hairstylist in Grand Rapids. I began my journey with cosmetology almost 8 years ago, I fall in love with it just as much now as I did in the beginning. Through continued education, self-expression, and a whole lot of investing in myself, I have reached one of my goals of becoming my own boss at Elysian Salon in Creston GR. My passions include vivid hair color, short hair/shaved designs, and weddings! I’ve had many amazing mentors through the years that have helped me get here, I currently work with two independent stylists that I admire daily! I have amazing clients and couldn’t be more grateful for the part they have all played to support me along this journey. I believe self-expression is unbelievably underrated in what you can do for people in just being able to help them express themselves! I am honored to provide everyone a safe space in my chair and in my energy to be authentically themselves through the power of art. Everyone is welcome in my chair 💜

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I think the hardest thing I’ve had to learn is to not allow myself to be taken advantage of. Give some people an inch; they take a mile. I am an incredibly hard worker and a little bit of a people pleaser…most take advantage of that! While I’m grateful for the opportunities I was provided along the way, it wasn’t without some hardcore anxiety and hurt here and there. At the end of the day, I’m grateful for the struggle because it taught me a lot about myself and others, what I’m willing to tolerate/what I’m not, it taught me how to stick up for myself, and most of all, it brought me growth. I wouldn’t change my journey for anything because it brought me here.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
My all-time favorite service to do is vivid hair color. I found a lot of self-expression through coloring my own hair crazy colors, and I love what something seemingly so simple can do for someone! It’s not for the sake of being noticed (even though I/clients stick out like a sore thumb most of the time) it’s for the art! It’s for self-expression, it’s for empowerment! We don’t have much control over what happens in life, but we can do whatever we want to our hair! Being able to create customized art for clients is such an honor because I know what it truly means. I also really enjoy short hairstyles and shaved hair designs, I joke that I like to vicariously live through my clients because I don’t know if I could ever go that short, but hey never say never. I love curly hair! Natural curls are my jam. Weddings are also a favorite, such a beautiful and special energy to be a part of!
