Meet Macy Crouch of West side of Kalamazoo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Macy Crouch.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always strived to provide my daughter with the life I never had growing up. Starting with learning how to cook. I thought being a great mother meant I needed to be domesticated so almost 14 years ago I taught myself how to cook and bake. Before that I could have burnt boiling water. What started off as simple growth quickly turned into a hobby and even an escape. I found my niche. 8 years ago I started selling cupcakes and a variety of other desserts from my home by advertising on Facebook. That gained me quite a bit of followers. Then one day my neighbor asked me to make a birthday cake. I laughed and decided, why not? I posted it on Facebook and started getting all kind of cake orders. Over the past 8 years I have taught myself everything I know. From baking to business. I never went to school or took classes. I didn’t have anyone teaching me. YouTube, Google and Pinterest taught me everything. I am now selling on average 20 cakes a week under the cottage food law, while maintaining a full time job and being a single mother. I’m still learning and growing to this day. I used to dream of having my own bakery and now I feel that is actually obtainable. My support on social media and in Kalamazoo has been unbelievable and now look, I’m going to be in a magazine.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been rough. Wanting to go all in with my business but needing to maintain stability within my home has been challenging. I have to have a steady paycheck and insurance. That isn’t always guaranteed as an entrepreneur. Being the only person providing for my daughter has made me choose a 9-5 more than once. Hanging up my apron never felt right though, so I always ended up right back in my kitchen. Im no longer at war with choosing between the two. I do both, and yes I am exhausted but it is worth every late night and early morning.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I provide custom cakes and cupcakes. I am personable and talk them through the entire ordering process. They aren’t filling out forms and having to choose between limited options. I take their ideas and do my best to turn them into reality. If they send me ideas for cakes that I’ve never done, I research and teach myself everything I need to know to create it for them.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am most popular on Facebook. My business name is Macy’s Cakery. I have a website currently in the works and hopefully will be up and running by the new year.
