Meet Lida Athearn of Athearn Realty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lida Athearn.

Hi Lida, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I came into real estate later in life, but the dream actually started much earlier. At 20 years old, I had a strong desire to pursue a career in real estate. At the time, though, I didn’t feel I could afford to take that leap. I chose to focus on getting married and raising my family, and I didn’t believe I could successfully do both.

In my late 30s, I revisited the idea. The passion for real estate had never really gone away. I knew it wouldn’t be easy—there was a lot of competition, and I had no experience in the industry. But I also knew I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life wondering, “What if?”

So I put my head down and got to work. I focused on learning, serving people well, and building relationships. One client, one transaction, and one referral at a time, the business began to grow.

Today, I’m proud to own Athearn Realty, a brokerage built on relationships, trust, and serving our community. Looking back, I’m grateful I didn’t let a later start stop me. Sometimes the path isn’t the one you planned at 20 years old—but if you’re willing to work hard and stay committed, it’s never too late to build something meaningful.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think anything worthwhile ever is without some struggle. Building a career in real estate has come with plenty of bumps, challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt. There were times when deals fell apart, opportunities didn’t work out, and I questioned whether I was doing enough or moving fast enough.

But I’ve learned that success isn’t about avoiding challenges—it’s about persevering through them. When obstacles come, you have a choice: give up or keep moving forward. I’ve always chosen to keep going.

The road hasn’t always been smooth, but it has absolutely been worth it.

We’ve been impressed with Athearn Realty, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’re a locally owned boutique brokerage rooted in Fenton and serving communities throughout Michigan. Our business has been built entirely through referrals, which is something we’re incredibly proud of because it means people trust us enough to recommend us to their family and friends.

At Athearn Realty, we value integrity, communication, hard work, and putting people first. We celebrate wins, walk alongside clients through difficult seasons, and strive to make the buying and selling process as smooth as possible.

What makes you happy?
The things that make me happiest aren’t really things at all, they’re people and purpose.

My family brings me the greatest joy. Being a wife, a mom, and watching my children grow into the people they’re becoming is something I try to never take for granted. Some of my favorite moments are often the simplest ones spent with the people I love.

I also find a lot of fulfillment in serving others. Whether it’s helping a family buy their first home, guiding someone through a difficult sale, mentoring an agent, or simply being there when someone needs support, I love knowing that what I do makes a difference in someone’s life.

My faith is another source of happiness and strength. It reminds me to focus on what truly matters and to trust God with the things I can’t control.

And finally, I love being part of this community. Seeing local businesses succeed, helping people put down roots, and watching our town continue to grow is incredibly rewarding.

For me, happiness isn’t found in achievements or titles. It’s found in relationships, purpose, faith, and knowing I’ve helped make someone’s journey a little easier.
