Meet Lauren Taormina of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Taormina.

Lauren, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was approached by a plaza owner who was trying to fill an old salon suite. He heard I was interested in opening a salon, I was but didnt know anything about running a business, I hadn’t been a hairdresser for very long and I didn’t have a clientele. He offered to let me have a few months rent free to get started and just use my profits to advertise my business. I jumped in and opened up, joined the local chamber, went to every event, got a vendor booth at every event, went to the local cosmetology schools to recruit staff. Now we are celebrating 15 years in business!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not very smooth for me at all, I opened with only having one other stylist from salon I previously worked. I didn’t have a clientele yet… (usually when someone decides to open a salon they typically have a few stylist they know and have built up a clientele). I opened up not knowing a whole lot about the industry, i had only been a hairdresser for 4 years. I really had to learn as I went through everything.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a hairstylist that specializes in color, i absolutely love doing a corrective color. I am very proud that my salon is so well known in the community, we barely advertise, it is pretty much all word of mouth. I would say we are known to be a friendly and comfortable environment. We have such a great team/salon family we all get along, there is no drama, amd we all help each other.

How do you think about happiness?
It makes me happy when I make others feel good. I get so much gratification when not only did I make someone look their best, but while they are in my chair that I made them feel good about themselves.
