Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Bigelow.
Hi Lauren, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My journey into creativity began in childhood, but it had a distinctive twist from the typical story. As a child, my artistic endeavors started with traditional drawing or painting but quickly transferred to other fields, such as interior design.
While other kids were immersed in cartoons, I found myself captivated by television shows about interior design. From the strategic placement of furniture to the careful selection of color palettes, these designers turned ordinary rooms into extraordinary living spaces. My after-school routine included watching these shows with a level of intensity usually reserved for action-packed adventures.
This sparked a passion for design that went beyond the usual boundaries of artistic expression. My crayons weren’t limited to paper; they became tools for experimenting with interior makeovers. I reveled in the challenge of looking at design as a holistic experience.
Over a decade later, I took this mindset to Penn State University, where I pursued a Bachelor in Design with a focus on Digital Multimedia Design. During my sophomore year, I started freelancing as a designer, gaining experience and honing my skills in graphic design.
After graduating, I took on various roles at the marketing agency Craft & Communicate. This experience was a crucial step in broadening my skill set beyond design as I managed the intricacies of marketing. Working in a fast-paced, professional agency provided me with exposure to diverse projects and clients on a kind and accountable team.
I continue contributing to this agency as a contractor while running my own brand studio, Laurelow. My focus here echoes what I’ve always believed but now get to fulfill: that art and strategy have great synergy, each giving depth and meaning to the other. Unlike most branding companies, my team doesn’t just create logos, websites, or other commercialized designs; we’re also artisans who draw, paint and create realistic as well as abstract murals that can speak to your brand’s identity and transform your atmosphere.
As I move forward, I am excited to explore new opportunities, further refine my skills, and continue to make meaningful creative contributions through creativity and strategy for brick-and-mortar businesses.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any venture, the journey has been a mix of successes and hurdles.
One of the primary challenges has been reaching the right balance between being an artist and running a business. While my passion lies in creating meaningful art, the demands of managing a company require many more skills, but I’ve enjoyed the process!
Second, not all businesses initially grasp the power of visual storytelling through drawings, paintings, and murals in the way we envision it. Overcoming this hurdle has involved effective communication and demonstrating the benefits of our approach.
Then there’s adaptation. The branding industry — not to mention all of my clients’ industries — is dynamic, with trends and client expectations evolving rapidly. Staying at the forefront of industry changes, technological advancements, and design trends is an ongoing effort.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
Thank you for listening. At Laurelow, we transform local business all around the United States into captivating brands through brand development (logo design and brand guidelines), workspace art (on-brand drawings, paintings, and murals), website design (with complete SEO and UI/UX optimization), and marketing content (a monthly graphic design and photography/videography subscription).
What sets us apart is our commitment to bringing brands to life not just on digital platforms or printable designs, but also in physical spaces through fine art. Traveling across the U.S., we curate entire visual experiences for our clients and whoever walks through their doors.
Whether it’s through visually stunning artwork or results-driven digital services, we’re delighted to be a go-to source for complete brand experiences.
How do you think about luck?
I try not to think in terms of good or bad luck; instead, I embrace the idea that life unfolds through a blend of unpredictable events and the results of my choices.
However, a number of privileges and chance encounters have contributed to the growth of my business. For one, I was raised in the modern-day U.S. by two professionals who highly valued education and greatly invested in my learning, both academic and artistic, both in and outside of formal schooling. In addition, chance events have played a role in connecting with key clients at the right times and discovering the unique ideas that make Laurelow all it is.
