Meet LADIES IN LAW®

Today we’d like to introduce you to LADIES IN LAW®.

Hi LADIES IN LAW®, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are the Co-Founders of LADIES IN LAW®, a modern law firm disrupting the traditional legal model by focusing exclusively on Estate Planning. LADIES IN LAW® has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who in America, National Trial Lawyers Top 40 Under 40 Michigan, and Expertise.com, and our work has been featured in The Michigan Chronicle, Detroit Legal News, Michigan Lawyers Weekly, BLAC Detroit, and Voyage Michigan.

After graduating magna cum laude and in the top 10% of our law school classes — Jazzy from The University of Toledo College of Law and Ameena from Wayne State University Law School — the two of us met at a prestigious downtown Detroit firm. We bonded over our shared frustration with how the law was often used reactively — to “put out fires” — rather than proactively to prevent them. As Albert Einstein said, “A clever person solves a problem. A wise person avoids it.” That mindset became our foundation for LADIES IN LAW®.

In 2019, we left “big law” behind to launch our own firm with a single mission: to make Estate Planning and Asset Protection accessible and attainable for everyday families. Our passion is deeply personal. Jazzy once watched families torn apart in Probate Court, while Ameena — whose brother has special needs — saw how proper planning could protect the most vulnerable. Together, we’ve turned those experiences into a purpose-driven practice helping others safeguard their loved ones and legacies.

Beyond our legal work, Jazzy has served on the boards of the Wolverine Bar Association and the Michigan Arthritis Foundation, advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, while Ameena is the board chair for Figure Skating in Detroit, a non-profit empowering girls of color through leadership and skating. When we are not lawyering, you can find us exploring new restaurants, concerts, and events around downtown Detroit — continuing to lead with heart, vision, and sisterhood.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not — when is entrepreneurship ever a smooth road? Maybe when pigs fly! Especially when you’re shaking up an entire industry the way we did with LADIES IN LAW®, by focusing exclusively on Estate Planning.

Most law firms try to be everything to everyone. Lawyers are notorious “yes” people. They’ll take on five different practice areas just to keep clients happy. But we went the opposite direction. We said *no* to the traditional model and *yes* to being laser-focused. That decision changed everything but it came with plenty of growing pains.

We had to figure out how to market in such a narrow, specialized area, and that meant educating the public about why Estate Planning is so crucial. We also had to completely rethink our business logistics from systems to pricing.

Then there was the mindset piece: believing in our vision before the rest of the world caught up to it. The fear of failure is real when you’re charting new territory. But those early struggles — the trial, error, and doubt — are what ultimately made LADIES IN LAW® what it is today: intentional, modern, and unapologetically different.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about LADIES IN LAW®?
LADIES IN LAW® is a Michigan-based, women-owned law firm dedicated exclusively to Estate Planning and Asset Protection. We specialize in helping families plan ahead — protecting what they’ve built, who they love, and the legacy they’ll leave behind. Our focus is simple yet powerful: to make Estate Planning accessible, understandable, and empowering for everyday people.

What truly sets us apart is that Estate Planning is all we do. While many firms juggle multiple practice areas, we chose to go all-in on one. That decision allowed us to become true specialists, offering an experience that’s highly personalized, educational, and client-centered. We take pride in explaining the law in real language, not legal jargon, so clients feel confident and informed every step of the way.

We’re also deeply intentional about how we show up as a brand. From our aesthetic and approachable tone to our modern, community-driven messaging, LADIES IN LAW® was built to feel different from the traditional law firm model. We’ve redefined what legal representation looks like — warm, relatable, and built on trust.

Brand-wise, we’re most proud of how we’ve built a firm that not only empowers clients, but also reflects who we are as women and professionals. We’re not your “old-school” attorneys — we’re relatable experts who believe that legacy planning is an act of love. Whether we’re helping a young family create their first Will, guiding a caregiver through a Special Needs Trust, or protecting a family business with a Living Trust, our goal is always the same: peace of mind and generational security.

At LADIES IN LAW®, we don’t just draft documents, we help people protect their legacy.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
For me, Ameena, curiosity was my superpower. I was always asking questions, reading everything I could get my hands on, and diving deep into details most people overlooked. I’ve always known who I am and never really cared what others thought — traits that served me well both in life and on the ice. I was a competitive figure skater growing up, and that experience shaped so much of my discipline, focus, and love for refinement.

I’ve always had a passion for expressing creativity through creation — first in how I developed, crafted and performed my skating programs, and now in how I’ve helped build a new way of practicing law. For me, creativity isn’t limited to art; it’s about how you think, how you problem-solve, and how you bring something new to life.

I was definitely a self-proclaimed nerd. I loved learning, loved structure, and found joy in improvement. My competitive nature was never about beating others; it was about challenging myself. How can I do this better? How can I elevate it next time? That mindset naturally carried into my legal career, especially in Estate Planning, which is all about foresight, precision, and preventing problems before they start.

For me, Jazzy, I was always highly independent and marched to the beat of my own drum. I didn’t follow the crowd. I had a strong internal compass and a clear sense of what I wanted, even from a young age. I carried a natural focus, drive, and direction that set me apart. I knew early on that I wanted to be an entrepreneur — someone who could create something meaningful, have ownership over their time, and build a lifestyle on their own terms. That vision has been with me for as long as I can remember.

As a child, I found inspiration in music — it was my escape, my motivator, and my creative outlet. I’d listen to songs and imagine big things for my future, often daydreaming about the life I was going to build. Whether it was visualizing success or mapping out my next goal, I was always future-focused. While other kids were thinking about what game to play next, I was thinking about what kind of impact I wanted to make in the world.

Looking back, that mix of independence, creativity, and ambition shaped not only how I grew up, but how I approach challenges and opportunities today. It’s a big part of what fuels me as an entrepreneur and continues to guide how I show up in both life and business.
