Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacretia L. Rogers.
Hi Lacretia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I actually started out in 2003 as a Public Relations consultant. I’ve worked some notable accounts that taught me a lot about client management and media communication. I found myself wanting to be on the editorial side of things, so I launched Detroit CEO Magazine in 2012 in a sold-out event at the Roberts Riverwalk Hotel.
Back then I didn’t know much about the attention to detail it would take to truly fulfill that venture, and I equally knew very little about the technical side of things (paper weight and size, bleed areas, etc.). It started off as a print publication that saw some mild success, but I attribute that to not being clear on a multitude of things. I then transitioned to digital, which was easier, but still overwhelming as I just didn’t realize the size of an undertaking this was.
I ended up in hiatus while trying to figure everything out. I’m a logistics specialist by trade, so I used some of those experiences in corporate to navigate my way through. During that hiatus, I created the Brave Ambition Radio Network, which is a division of my company, Detroit CEO Media. It was important for me to create a content space where creators can share their points of view about topics that educate, entertain and enlighten audiences. Since then, I’ve recently relaunched Detroit CEO Magazine, and I fell like the hiatus, coupled with creating a black woman owned content space has only improved the publication.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I definitely wasn’t a smooth road. Some of the struggles along the way included me having imposter syndrome at one point, ironically. I’ve had successes and failures, but during those successful periods, there was still a feeling of inadequacy. I doubted and second-guessed myself, which caused me to actually work harder instead of smarter. Now that I know better, I’ve learned valuable lessons, and I share those lessons with others so we can all elevate ourselves to a high standard of excellence, in whatever industry we represent.
Certain struggles have also come from me unnecessarily over-extending myself, which left me exhausted and overwhelmed. It’s ok to say no. We know what our capabilities are, but oftentimes in an effort to be a people-pleaser, we say yes to things we shouldn’t. We can avoid lots of obstacles and challenges, albeit not entirely, through being honest with ourselves about what we can handle and show up for.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Detroit CEO Media?
Detroit CEO Media is a podcast development and media production company. Under that umbrella, I’ve worked with multiple creators to produce their podcasts on the Brave Ambition Radio Network. If I could say I specialize in anything, it would be digital product development. Being my authentic self sets me apart from others, but not in a bad or competitive way. After a conversation or two with me, most feel empowered to operate in their own authenticity.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the growth I’ve experienced over the years. If you’re not a student of life who is committed to growth, not only business-wise but in every area of your life, you’ll remain stagnant.
My company offers a Podcast Masterclass and one on one consulting services for companies and non-profit organizations that want to add a podcast to their brand story.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Accountability is most important to my current success and any other successes I want to experience in the future. You can’t get to wherever you’re trying to go, without it. You have to be teachable, because none of us are always right.
