Today we’d like to introduce you to Kylee Lipinski.
Hi Kylee, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Kylee and I am a professional hula hoop artist. I teach workshops, perform across the country, and create choreography! And it all started with a single video online.
As a kid, I was always drawn to movement. I loved anything active and creative, whether it was gymnastics, dance, cheerleading, or simply picking up a hula hoop. I remember being able to do it naturally, but I never imagined it could become an art form or profession.
I cheered competitively until I was 17. After high school, I jumped straight into adulthood, focusing on work and leaving those creative outlets behind. During my teenage years and early adulthood, I struggled with anxiety and depression. Like many people do, I slowly stopped making time for hobbies that brought me joy, and eventually I realized I didn’t really have anything that was just for me.
Then one day everything changed.
I came across a video of a girl doing incredible hula hoop tricks in her driveway. She wasn’t a circus performer or someone on a big stage. She was just an ordinary person doing something extraordinary with a hoop. I had never seen anything like it. I immediately fell down an internet rabbit hole, amazed by what was possible, and that same day I ordered my very first polypro hoop from MoodHoops.
When it arrived, I spent hours on YouTube learning the basics. I was completely hooked.
What I didn’t expect was how therapeutic hooping would become. Hours would disappear without me noticing. It was one of the first activities that truly quieted my mind. Instead of focusing on my anxiety, I was focused on movement, creativity, and learning something new. Looking back, it became a form of meditation for me, and it genuinely changed my life.
I started posting little clips of my progress on Instagram, just to document my journey. Before long, I discovered there was an entire community of hoopers. I started meeting up with other artists around Detroit, learning from them, and pushing myself to improve.
As I kept sharing my journey, opportunities started finding me. I was invited to perform at local events, teach workshops, and eventually I earned a sponsorship with a hoop company. Every new opportunity felt surreal.
Fast forward almost ten years, and I’ve now taught workshops all over the United States and even in Costa Rica. I became the Globe Fit Professional Hula Hoop Champion in 2022, and one of the moments I’m most proud of is becoming sponsored by MoodHoops, the very same company that made my first professional hoop. It feels like everything has come full circle.
More than anything, hooping has given me a community. I’ve made lifelong friends, including my best friend, Rachelle, and it’s had an incredible impact on my mental health. What started as a hobby became a passion, a profession, and a way to help others.
That’s why I love teaching. I know firsthand how one simple hobby can completely change someone’s life, and I hope to inspire others to discover what they’re capable of, both with a hoop and beyond.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not always been a smooth road, and I’ve faced plenty of challenges along the way.
One of the biggest struggles was simply believing in myself. When I first started hooping, there weren’t many people around me who understood it as an art form. To a lot of people, it was just a toy. It took confidence to continue pursuing something I loved, even when others didn’t always see the vision.
Like any skill, progress didn’t happen overnight. There were things that took me weeks, months l, and even years to learn. I’ve experienced injuries, creative blocks, and moments where I compared myself to other artists I would see online. Learning to celebrate my own journey instead of measuring it against someone else’s was one of the most valuable lessons hooping has taught me.
Perhaps my biggest challenge was my own mental health. Anxiety and depression made it difficult at times to stay motivated. Ironically, the very thing that challenged me also became the reason I kept going. Hooping gave me an outlet, a community, and a sense of purpose. Every obstacle I overcame made me not only a stronger performer, but also a stronger person. I have found that it’s normal to go through motivational ups and downs, and every hoop artist has hoop ruts!!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Every hooper has their own unique style, and that’s one of the things I love most about our community. I enjoy exploring all kinds of hooping techniques, but over the years I’ve developed a style that feels uniquely my own by blending dynamic, circus-inspired tricks with meditative, flowy movement. I think that balance comes naturally from my background in competitive cheer and dance, where I learned to combine athleticism with artistry and performance.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
