Meet KyLee Carter

Today we’d like to introduce you to KyLee Carter.

Hi KyLee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A year or so ago I found myself feeling more lost than ever. The political state of our nation, the constant anticipation of what name I would find myself chanting, seared into my brain; my mental Rolodex of our nation’s black brothers and sisters whose lives were taken too soon due to ignorance, racism, and social injustices. Now enters the invasive virus of covid that forced myself to feel a sense of uneasiness, sadness, and alienation. I knew that more than ever; I needed an outlet to find myself again. I wanted to create light in what I felt like was a consistent dread of dark, and most importantly I wanted to uplift women and men of the BIPOC community and connect others with stories and narratives from the forever underrepresented. Insert Lost Girl Vision. I’ve always been fascinated with creative art. I was a theatre kid in high school, and a chorale singer throughout all of grade school. I’m an avid fan of cinematography and will watch a film based off the direction of photography alone. If there is a museum around, you can bet I am taking a stroll. Art has always called to me and what better way to tell a story than through a beautiful, composed photo.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Are the roads to your ultimate dream destination ever smooth? It’s always a bumpy ride. I am a completely self-taught photographer. I have no educational background in the art of photography. I am consistently learning, adapting, and adjusting. I have to consistently remind the Aquarius in me, who expects myself to be an expert on day two, that I am in the beginning of my story and the consistent work, energy, and passion that I put in will come back tenfold.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My brand is centered around inclusivity, empowerment, and uplifting the BIPOC community. I make it an absolute point to showcase plus-size models, LGBTQ+ models, people of the BIPOC community, and any other story that is underrepresented in mainstream media. There are so many beautiful stories to be told and I believe that truly sets me apart from other photographers.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
What would life be without risks? If it wasn’t for me jumping in headfirst and taking the risk of creating Lost Girl Vision, then I wouldn’t have blossomed into the version of myself that you see today. Risks are magical. To dive into the unknown is a thrill that can either be the best or worst thing you could have done. I’ll take my chances on anything if there’s a 50/50 chance, I’ll come out better than I was for taking it. Self-improvement is something I admire and risks can lead to a beautiful transformation.
