Meet Kurt Robertson of Jackson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kurt Robertson.

Hi Kurt, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My interest in photography started when I was 13 years old. I photographed lots of things at that time. When you look back you think wow, I’ve come a long way. I’m so much better at this than I was at that time. What has not changed is the camera stopped those moments. I have always viewed the camera at a time machine. It can only stop moments but sometimes those moments become precious.
For over 38 years, I have been shaping moments into timeless works of art. Earning the prestigious titles of Master Photographer and Photographic Craftsman, I have dedicated my career to capturing people at their most expressive and authentic.
Based in Jackson, Michigan, my work blends the honest, approachable character of the Midwest with the bold, dramatic flair of high-fashion and editorial photography. My style is defined by graphic composition, confident lighting, and clean, timeless storytelling, whether in a commercial shoot, a senior portrait, or a children’s milestone session.
My career began with a deep fascination for the way light interacts with people and places. Over the decades, I have honed my craft through relentless experimentation, and education though professional organizations like the Professional Photographers of America. Stylized sets and location shoots, innovative posing and backgrounds that push beyond the ordinary. My portfolio now spans fashion, editorial, commercial, family, children, senior, and preschool photography, as well as special event portraits like Easter Bunny and Santa sessions.
A generation of families return to Studio One Photography to preserve their most important moments, from preschool portraits that capture first-day-of-school excitement to senior pictures that mark the leap into adulthood.
Today, I continue to explore new techniques, including drone photography and creative mixed-media projects, always with the same guiding principle: the photograph should be as memorable and unique as the person in front of the lens.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course there has been some struggles. There have been many successes as well. That’s true of life in general and your career reflects that.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m know for children’s portraits among other things. I have a good relationship with children and can build repour quickly with most. Sometimes you are kind of tricking them but your goal is always to produce the best portrait possible.

I’m most proud of the fact I’m a survivor. Adversity comes everyone’s way but overcoming it is what makes you special.

I’m obsessed with quality of my work. Sometimes to my own detriment.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I take bits and pieces from everything. One of my resources is music. I probably would have been into poets 200 years ago but lyricist are the new poets now.
