Meet Kristy Aka Javelin Howard of Kalamazoo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Aka Javelin Howard.

Kristy aka Javelin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
During the day I am a director of supply chain for large healthcare system, by night I’m a derby player and a coach that owns a skate/jersey apparel company. In 2006 I found Roller Derby and fell in love with the sport and the community I became a part of. In 2011, I was sponsored by a skate company called Atom skates. They provided me with gear, skates, plates etc. During that time, they started a program where I became the representative for their company in Midwest region. They sent me 30k worth of skates, plates, wheels, pads, etc. They sent me to events to size people for skates and talk about the products they sold. I started to realize how much money people wasted not being able to have someone with expertise size them and discuss the pros and cons with different setups. I already had a passion for derby but at that time, I realized how much I enjoyed seeing people get set up in equipment correctly the first time, but also see their excitement and trust in my expertise. Over the past 14 years I’ve created a pretty substantial business with several different skate vendors. Roughly two years ago, I started an International online jersey and apparel shop that produces fully sublimated garments within 15 business days. Due to the fact that a I am a Director of Supply Chain for a large Healthcare system I’ve only really advertised on Facebook and by word of mouth. In the next 12 months I plan to develop a website that can reach a larger customer base internationally.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle has been time and money. I am a player, coach, and board member for the past 19 years for Kalamazoo Roller Derby and Kalamazoo Killer Beez. This past year I passed the torch to new board members so that I can focus more on the business. Being the director of supply has helped me but also taken time away from my personal business. I am a servant leader and have high expectations to deliver good service and quality products.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have been in healthcare for 29 years managing multiple areas throughout my career. The areas of my professional career has been surgical services and supply chain operations. I am currently the director of operations at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, MI. I have a bachelors in business and a masters in organizational leadership.

Skatin Not Hatin’ is the name of my skate shop and apparel company. I am most proud of the fact that I have been able to create an inclusive environment that delivers quality products with great service. Aside from the businesses that I serve I am also a single mom of amazing daughter who has help me work with skaters, work on designs and any other thing I need help with in life.

Any big plans?
In the future I plan to expand the skate shop business with enhanced online global presence and possibly open a brick n motar shop in Kalamazoo. I would like to try to work with schools and local sport facilities to set up skate clubs in schools so that kids and adults can get more exposure and access to roller skating for fitness, enjoyment and competitive sports. Lets be real EVERYTHING is cooler on wheels:)
