Today we’d like to introduce you to Kitty Pawell.
Hi Kitty, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
A story from the storyteller! How fun! Well, where to begin. I’ve been able to read since the age of two. Both my mother and grandmother always supplied me with books. Whether it was trips to the local library or to Borders (my favorite bookstore even though they’re gone now). At age five I wanted to make my own adventures. I wanted to save the girl, ride the dragon, spoil the villains plan. Now the scribblings of a five year old weren’t all that coherent I’ll admit, but age seven is where things started to make sense. So much so that I even had a poem of mine published in the Detroit Library poetry competition. Please don’t ask what the poem was about. I do not remember a single word! My story writing started right after that and continued right up to middle school. Don’t get me wrong. My writing didn’t stop because I grew out of it or found it boring. I was on several sports teams and just couldn’t find the time. That changed in highschool though, thankfully. I was still in as many sports, but my reading pace had continued to grow in speed. I was consuming books in hours and not days. That reinvigorated my hunger to write my own stories. And so I began to fill up notebooks with different ideas. Some were good, some are never to be spoken about. Ever. I also started my own blog at the time and that was actually going pretty well. They were just short erotic stories that had over 21,000 readers before I shut it down in 2023. Which brings us to recent times. 2023 was a really special year for me because as I said I’ve wanted to create my own stories since I was 5, but as you grow up you learn that the world can be difficult and cruel. Enter imposter syndrome. There was an unease that had washed over me in my young adult years. I was convinced no one would read my stories, which in hindsight is ridiculous because I just told you that over 21,000 people read my stories before. And yet, even with that knowledge I developed the worse writer’s block of my life and didn’t write again until 2019. Even that was a slow trickle and not the overflowing stream it used to be when I was in high school. I’d fought my block as much as I could, but the little voice in the back of my head was louder than my confidence and I stopped all together once again. Then came TikTok. Now, that may sound strange, but hear me out. TikTok wasn’t appealing to me at first either because I initially thought it was just a hoarde of dancing videos and kids pulling pranks on people. Which it is but that’s not all it is. There is a section of TikTok called BookTok and that’s the community I’m apart of. It’s full of every day people who just love books, and reading, and writing! People just like me! So when I saw that they had the courage to self publish their books it reawkened mine. Lust Drunk Nights featuring a Black, bisexual, indie author debuted August 27, 2023. That was the very day I became a published author! I’d finally achieved the dream of that five year old little girl! I just completed my Trilogy last year in July and am now working on my prequel to the series! Imposter syndrome will always be a thing no matter how many books I write and published because I’m human, but now I have a physical representation of my courage to believe in myself that helps me mute that voice now!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The real issue about imposter syndrome is that it roots deep into your mind and practically screams at you your every insecurity. What’s worse is the voice isn’t some foreign, disembodied, gravely voice. It sounds exactly like you. So as you try to encourage and push yourself you have essentially a negative you listing reasons why you should give up. That negativity can be very convincing because it’s safer to give up than to get your feelings hurt by someone rejecting your work.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an author! I write fiction stories, specializing in erotic romance and paranormal stories featuring black main characters! I’m know for strong black female leads that take no mess from anyone and go after what they want! I’m proud of the fact that I’ve been told that I’m the reason someone found the courage to write and publish their own book! I think what sets me apart is that I have a seriously high I don’t give a ____ meter. Outside of my own little voice that tries to discourage me no one else can. No one can stop me from doing what I want. I don’t allow anyone to have that type of power over me! Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but their not entitled to me caring about theirs. It’s my life and stories I right them for me not for others, but if other people like them then that’s simply a bonus!
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
When my grandmother took me to Borders and we spent an entire afternoon reading before she bought me several books!
