Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Carter.
Hi Katie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started making cookies in 2018 after my dad passed away, I was in search of a new hobby to spark some joy back into my life when I stumbled upon cookie decorating in preparation for my daughter’s 4th Frozen theme birthday party. After a few months of practicing, I started making cookies for family and friends, word started to get out that there was a new cookie lady in town, I made a Facebook business page and before I knew it, I was making cookies for complete strangers.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I came back from a 9-month maternity leave after having our son, just weeks before the world shut down for COVID-19, I feared the timing was bad, who would buy cookies from a cottage food home baker during a global-wide pandemic? 100’s and 100’s of people. I would have a line of people down my driveway and around my cul de sac waiting in line to buy cookies off of my front porch.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to believe my official title is “Cookie Artist”, sugar cookies are my chosen canvas and royal icing is my paintbrush. I specialize in fun, whimsical, bright, detailed, delectable, one-of-a-kind, artisan sugar cookies. I am known for making what are described as cookies that are “too pretty to eat” for all occasions from birthday parties to baby and bridal showers to retirement parties, I make cookies for it all. I am most proud of the relationships that I have built with my clientele, the clients who come to me for their gender reveal party and baby shower and baby’s 1st birthday, who I get to share life’s most memorable moments with over and over again, means the world to me.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My husband, Jay Carter, AKA “Mr. Cookie Lady” quit his full-time shop job to help me pursue my dream of being a full-time cookie lady. Together we have made 1,000’s of cookies over the last 2 years. He is always so supportive of whatever new thing I want to take on, whether it be new products, devoting our Saturdays to farmers markets to starting up cookie classes, he’s always on board and one step ahead of me. He helps with making dough, baking cookies, email correspondence, invoicing, box building, cookie packaging, anything, and everything. I couldn’t do it all without him.
