Meet Kathy Davies of Bloomfield Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Davies

Hi Kathy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I knew I always wanted to be a photography…I didn’t think it was possible so I just gave up the dream. I got my bachelor’s degree, cosmetology license and then decided to just go for it when I was in a ton of debt and living at home at 24. My parents helped me buy my first camera for my birthday and that’s when my dream job started! I worked leasing apartments for 2 years while building my business and by the 2nd year, I had 18 weddings! I worked so so hard and am so grateful every day that I get to do something I love so much while being able to stay home with my 3 little boys.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When you’ve been shooting for so long and at the same venues a lot, you can lose inspiration in a way. I feel like after I had my first son, it changed my perspective and I fell in love with it all over again, especially because it’s something for ME. It can also be pretty isolating, especially when you’re a mom, it’s hard to get out and do extra because i’m barely surviving being a mom full time and owning my own business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a photojournalistic wedding and family photographer. I’ve been shooting families and weddings for 13years now and wouldn’t change a thing, it’s what I was meant to do! Candid shots are my favorite, I feel that you can really get some great ones at weddings and especially with children. I also love the more editorial artful shots, I always try to get a mix of both in my final galleries. Some things that inspire me and I would be known for are connection between my clients and myself, natural light, nature, imperfections, movement, soft tones, laughter…so much! Traveling also inspires me, new places with fresh eyes and a new perspective is what I really love.

I’m proud that I worked so hard to get where I am today, nothing was handed to me. I am self taught and blogged like crazy when I first started out, so many of my clients are from word of mouth and my favorite is when they come back to capture other milestones in their lives.

I’m really goofy and don’t take myself too seriously. I love candid moments that you can’t duplicate and I also like to give direction want my clients to feel confident and have fun!

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I feel like being kind is everything. If a wedding planner or venue asks for my photos, I always want to make things easy for them as long as they credit me too! It’s a win/win and then we can refer each other in the future. I think doing styled shoots together is also a good way to get to know other vendors, I wish I had more time to do those things these days!
