Meet Kate Voss of Kate’s Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Voss.  

Hi Kate, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Started working at a coffee shop while attending MSU. When I got home from school, I continued working in coffee shops for over 10 years before I finally decided to open my own. That’s now 10 years later, so for over 20 years, I’ve been in the coffee world. 

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Opposite of smooth. Though it may appear smooth to an outsider, the reality of being in this business is a grind. 😉 Projections of cost, payroll, taxes, supplies, equipment, sales to afford all those things…it’s a long and winding road of trial and error. 

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Kate’s Downtown?
We are located in the heart of Port Huron. We are a cafe offering scratch-made food, great coffee, and a versatile event location. We specialize in customer service. If we don’t know your name, we will learn it. 

We bake & cook from scratch. We source locally. We thrive with our Katering off-site. 

We are the feel-good stop your heart & tummy needs. One of our devout customers call it ‘a hug in a mug’. That’s pretty accurate. 

Our staff members usually stay with us for long periods of time. I have fantastic people I work beside. My real success lies with them. 

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most definitely the 2 shockers I get owning a cafe… I don’t drink coffee of any kind, and I am not a chef and have no culinary background. But I’m smart because I surround myself with people that do! 🙂
