Meet Kara Gonzalez of Muskegon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Gonzalez.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was a teenager when I got my hands on a point and shoot digital camera and was immediately obsessed. I had big ideas that turned into bigger equipment and new skills. “I won’t know until I try” was how I approached new obstacles, and that led to opportunities and moments I don’t believe I would’ve had otherwise. Photography continues to be a considerable force in my life as I approach 36 this year. It has challenged me in ways I didn’t anticipate but am grateful for. Today I photograph with confidence and have built a beautiful little business with clients that have grown with me!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been an interesting road! Creativity is so dependent on mental health, and I struggled with mine in addition to alcoholism for years. I didn’t like myself or the work I created in that time, and honestly, I dreaded working. Photography was no longer my passion, and I learned the hard way how important it is to step back and ask for help. I worked hard and am grateful to be where I’m at today and so thankful for the people around me! I began this endeavor with a 12″ monitor that sat on top of a storage bin, and I used refurbished equipment. You don’t have to start with a lot, JUST START.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My favorite images to create, and what I believe I’m known for, are my creative composites. I love putting the projects together! I’m self-taught, but I come from a hardworking and creative family, so figuring things out (props, headpieces, photoshop) is innate. You just figure it out, I guess lol. One of my favorites is an image of me falling backwards into a large hole in the ground. My friend let me take photos on her property and the hole they had dug stuck out to me. I took the photo of myself falling backwards in my kitchen later that night and combined them in photoshop. I think my clients like my attention to detail. I will bend over backwards to make my consistent clients happy.
I do love family and senior sessions! Growing with families has been so much fun. This year I am offering wedding photography services and am excited to see where that takes me.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Sharing my work online or your experience if you’ve worked with me helps SO MUCH!

I can be contacted through social media, my website, and email!
