Today we’d like to introduce you to Kandra Hutchison
Hi Kandra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started experimenting with photography in high school and would take photos for fun. I went on to study Graphic Design in college at Lawrence Technological University and took a film and digital photography class. Learning film photography grew my knowledge and love for photography, and I learned a lot about composition, light, and the correct settings to use. While in college, I would take portraits of friends and photographed graduation portraits. I then got the chance to do an engagement session and learned that I love photographing couples! It’s super fun to learn about a couple’s unique story and then be able to take photos during a really exciting time in their lives. From there, I made things official, created an LLC, built a website, and started posting more engagement and wedding work on my Instagram. First-hand experience is the best way to grow and improve in the photography world. At every wedding I photograph, I learn something new and improve upon my skills. I’m always trying to improve and grow and never stop learning; that mindset continues to keep me and my business successful today!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge was breaking into the wedding market. It’s such a competitive and saturated market, and photographing weddings is such an important life milestone. So, obviously, couples want to make sure they’re hiring someone they can trust who has past wedding photography experience. Understandably, it’s hard to get those opportunities when you’re starting out because of how important a wedding day is. I got super lucky with my first few engagement sessions and weddings. They were mainly friends or friends of friends. I’m so incredibly grateful my early couples gave me the chance!

I specialize in wedding photography and I’ve been photographing couples and weddings for about 7 years.
What sets me apart: I recognize that at the end of the day, the wedding experience is about the couple, not just the photos. I aim to offer a positive and enjoyable experience that creates ease throughout the day. I strive to maintain a subtle presence while still capturing every detail and offering necessary guidance through the key moments of the day. I aim to serve my couples in whatever way they need beyond just taking photos!
