Today we’d like to introduce you to Josie Krupp.
Hi Josie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Originally the idea for the Yard came about because our restaurant patio was so busy. We created the Paddle Hard Yard as an offsite extension of our brewpub space down the block modeled after other shipping container bars- not our original never seen before idea. We wanted to create a space where people could gather with friends outside and thought the design would be unique in our area. Sometimes you just want to sit in the sun on a patio and enjoy Northern Michigan. Live music was a big part of the venue plans. We have expanded our FREE concert series to have over 20 performances in 2023 and over 30 performances each of the past 2 years (2024-25) and another 30 concert dates planned for the upcoming 2026 summer season. It has also been a great space for hosting events; we’ve held multiple weddings and receptions, baby showers, bridal showers, and many graduation parties since we opened the Yard in September 2022. We are only open seasonally during warm weather months, with most of our activities taking place between Memorial Day and shutting down by October.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We were building out the venue during post covid- costs were higher, permits moved slower. People were excited for an outdoor venue, it just took a LONG time to be able to open. There was a point where we weren’t sure we were going to be able to open.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Live music is a big accomplishment for us. We partnered with a local musician who runs his own booking agency to help us curate a good mix of quality shows week after week. He has been a godsend as we navigate this type of venue. It also is fully outdoors which makes for a very fun, unique atmosphere. The shipping containers make for great viewing of the level below, and from above Michigan Ave looking toward town, the river, and other businesses.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Always fun to see where our patrons are visiting from – out of state, out of country, down the road. We love the interactive element of this space to really get to enjoy our customers. We are always impressed at how transformative each group makes the space for their show or event.
