Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Roth.
Joshua, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Musgrove + Company began in 2018, where we started as a pop-up shop inside the British Tea Garden due to a market demand for coffee after a previous cafe downtown closed in 2017. Our mission of Coffee is Community was prevalent from the very beginning; we worked with local bakers and made a connection with a coffee farm in Costa Rica in which we sourced our beans. Since the pop-up shop, we now have a standalone location across the street and a second location in Jackson, MI, with renovations underway for our third shop in Adrian, MI. We still source all of our coffee from the same farmer in Costa Rica, and now we handle the roasting as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As many experienced, the last few years have been difficult through the pandemic; however, thanks to a very supportive community and some internal maneuvers, we have been surviving.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Musgrove + Company?
Our specialty direct trade coffee is unique in terms of the processing and handling at origin. We specifically use a Honey Process coffee in which, during the drying process of the harvest, our coffee is not washed in order to keep all of the fruit mucilage on the bean to capture those flavors unique to the origin. This process creates a more fruity and bright finish in the taste of our coffee.
We take pride in full transparency of our coffee; from origin to crafting a drink we know the entire process. The amount of effort at origin makes us very passionate in coffee, and we make every attempt to protect the hard work that goes into growing the coffee plants.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Our welcomeness is very important in each one of our shops. We want all individuals to feel comfortable. When it comes to creating a drink, we strive to eliminate the intimidation of ordering coffee drinks; we want to talk about what you are looking for and craft something together.
