Hi Joseph, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Moving to Florida with my wife so she could pursue her zoology career ended up setting the course for my entire career with campers. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do for a living, but I landed a job at a local RV repair shop and quickly realized I had found my calling. I discovered a real passion for the work, picked up the trade fast, and thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on problem-solving.
When my wife’s career led us to another part of Florida, I decided to take the leap and start my own mobile RV repair business. I built and ran a thriving business for several years, but eventually, family called us home. As Michigan natives, my wife and I wanted to start our own family surrounded by our parents and extended family back where we grew up.
Upon moving back North, I launched Independent Camper RV Repair. Just like in Florida, the demand for mobile service here was immense and the market was wide open. Over the past four years in the Flint area, the response has been incredible. That initial mobile operation has grown, leading us to expand into a RV repair facility as well, while continuing to serve our community with the same dedication we started with.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, it has been anything but a smooth ride. Building and growing a business comes with a steep learning curve, especially when transitioning from a solo mobile operation to managing a full-scale shop. Navigating the financial hurdles of obtaining business loans, keeping up with rapid expansion, and finding skilled, reliable technicians who take as much pride in the craftsmanship as I do have been constant challenges.
Beyond the business side, the technical work itself keeps you on your toes. RVs are unique because no two campers are built exactly the same, and no two repair jobs are identical. You frequently encounter custom setups, discontinued parts, or obscure technical issues that require creative, on-the-spot problem-solving. It’s a job where you never stop learning, but pushing through those daily puzzles is what makes the work so rewarding.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck has definitely played a role in our journey, and we’ve experienced our fair share of both the good and the bad.
Some days, bad luck seems to take over. You encounter unexpected repair hitches, discontinued parts, or jobs that turn out to be far more complex than anticipated. Those are the long, grinding days where it feels like nothing is going right and progress is painfully slow.
On the flip side, good luck hits on days where every diagnosis is spot-on and we finish way ahead of schedule, those are great days! I also feel like we had a great deal of luck when securing our shop location, we are very blessed to have a facility for repairs over the winter.
Ultimately, luck gives you the high points and the hurdles, but experience has taught us that consistency is what keeps you going. You take the wins with gratitude, learn from the losses, and keep pushing forward regardless of which way the wind is blowing that day.
