Meet John Italiano of Thrive Family Health Direct Primary Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Italiano.

Hi John, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I knew I always wanted to become a family doctor since I was in grade school. I was inspired by my own doctor who I looked up to and made me feel cared for. As I got older I learned to love the sciences, and in high school shadowed some family doctors and knew I wanted to go to medical school.
Fast forward through medical school, residency, board certifications in Family Medicine, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, and Lifestyle Medicine — and I kept running into the same wall. The traditional insurance-based model just wasn’t letting me be the doctor I felt called to be. Fifteen-minute appointments. Mountains of paperwork. Patients falling through the cracks. That’s not why I got into this.
So I made a decision. I built something different.
Thrive Family Health Direct Primary Care is the practice I always envisioned — where I actually know my patients, where a family can text me directly, where we spend real time together and get ahead of problems before they become crises. No insurance middlemen. No copays. Just honest, whole-person care rooted in faith, relationship, and prevention.
We just opened our doors in Grand Rapids, and I genuinely cannot wait to see what God does with it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The struggles along the way include the demand of becoming a physician– the long nights studying and working, sacrifice from attending life events due to demands of working, being away from friends or family on the missed holidays, among many others. Once obtaining ,my medical degree and completing residency, starting a new practice from scratch in a new community has also had its challenges. There is a lot of work as a solo doctor managing patients, administrative tasks, and balancing a healthy work life balance. With time, I hope to hire a staff member to alleviate some of these administrative tasks.

As you know, we’re big fans of Thrive Family Health Direct Primary Care. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Thrive Family Health is a Direct Primary Care practice in Grand Rapids, Michigan — and the simplest way I can describe it is this: it’s what going to the doctor should feel like.
For $100 a month, you get unlimited primary care visits, same-day or next-day appointments, and my direct cell phone number. You can call me, text me, email me. No hold music. No ‘the doctor will see you in six weeks.’ Just real access to a real physician who actually knows you.
What makes us genuinely different — and I say this not to brag but because it matters clinically — is that I’m the only Direct Primary Care physician in Grand Rapids who is a board-certified DO with training in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment. OMT is a hands-on, whole-body approach to care that most family practices simply don’t offer. Back pain, neck pain, headaches, posture issues — we can address those in the office without immediately defaulting to medications or referrals.
We also specialize in Lifestyle Medicine, which means we’re not just putting a band-aid on symptoms. We’re asking why. Sleep, nutrition, movement, stress, relationships — all of it matters, and all of it is part of the conversation here.
The model itself is beautifully simple. One flat monthly fee. No copays. No surprise bills. No insurance drama. Your membership covers your visits, your annual physical, your initial labs, InBody composition analysis, and full in-office procedures. We even offer wholesale labs and in-house medications at prices that are honestly cheaper than most insurance copays.
But here’s what I’m most proud of — and this is the thing I want your readers to really hear. This practice is faith-driven and family-centered. I am a follower of Jesus, and that shapes everything about how I show up for my patients. I believe people are made body, mind, and spirit — and I try to care for all three. We see patients from newborn through geriatrics. We want to be your family’s doctor for decades, not just a transaction.
The atmosphere here reflects that too. Nature paintings on the walls, travel photos, warm lighting, good music playing — it feels nothing like a traditional clinic because it is nothing like a traditional clinic.
Grand Rapids deserves healthcare that actually feels human. That’s what we’re building

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is playing at my baseball games and always seeing my parents there in the stands to root for me! I have always felt so loved and supported by my family, and I am forever grateful for that.
