Meet Johdi of Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johdi

Hi JOHDI, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Singing and music have been my passion for as long as I can remember! My mom says I’ve been on pitch since age 2! When I was 7 I was in the kitchen singing Freedom by Aretha Franklin to the top of my lungs and I’ve never stopped singing since. With the singing came the love for acting. My beautiful black mama became my biggest cheerleader. Taking me to every audition, rehearsal, performance, and class! She nurtured my gifts and made sure I had the outlets I needed to express and grow. Now I’m a full time independent artist and vocalist! I’ve shared stages with some of the legends and musical favorites. Every day I wake up and thank God for blessing me with my voice and the ability to live my dreams and passions out. I’m currently working on my first album. I can’t wait for everyone to hear this new music. It has my heart and soul in it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This journey hasn’t been easy! I’ve run into many challenges and obstacles along the way but I’ve never stopped. This industry is a fast moving and slow moving one all at the same time. I’ve learned to trust myself. I’ve also embraced pure transparency because without it I can’t be true to the art I’m creating. I’ve dealt with imposter syndrome and self sabotage. Questioning if I’m good enough. What I’ve come to learn is that my music is for someone. It’s for everyone who is meant to love it and connect with it. I’ve been working hard and just writing what I feel. Some beautiful art has been born because of it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create beautiful music! I loooove R&B and Soul. I am an artist who has to put all my emotion and feeling into how I deliver a song. With each note there’s inflection and expression. I’m proud of the growth and progress over the years. I’m grateful for being taught how to have a strong work ethic. I believe in putting my all into whatever it is I’m doing. Being a working background vocalist, worship leader, and soloist, I’m going to show up knowing the material and ready to sing. I love working with others. When it comes to collaborative work it’s one of my favorite things about my profession!

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Covid-19 taught me that loved ones are important, life is short, and tomorrow isn’t promised! Being in the industry I’m in Covid was really hard. There weren’t many job/gig opportunities. We had to get creative with how we shared our art with the world. It really put life into perspective for me because I had no choice but to focus on the important things. All while finding ways to stay connected and progressive with music.
