Meet Joel Pendl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Pendl. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Joel has a background in radio editing and has always thought soundwaves would be great as contemporary artwork. We have created this one-of-a-kind artwork for about 25 of the most common phrases, such as I love you more, you are my sunshine, and love you to the moon and back. This artwork is also available as 9 different American Flags made with 56 soundwaves each, with all the states spoken as the stars, and the Pledge of Allegiance, the Second Amendment, or one of 7 other options spoken out as the stripes. We also have The Lord’s Prayer available. Not only do we have our pre-made phrases, but they are also completely customizable. We can use any audio or video you have, including voicemails or old VHS tapes, baby’s heartbeats, or a dog’s bark to create the soundwave; then we can add a QR code so you scan it with your phone and hear your loved one’s voice playback. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We live full-time on the road, and trying to find a balance between family, homeschooling, and running a business has been a challenge, as it is for any small business owner. It is also challenging trying to stay up with the latest technology, the newest items, and inventory in general on the road. It has also been very rewarding—we get to see different parts of the country since we are in a different place every week! We’ve also enjoyed being able to minister to families with such meaningful, memorable artwork.

Our uniqueness sets us apart in this art category. Please see our first answer for a more specific explanation. What also sets us apart is that our family of 4 lives full-time in a 24-foot motorhome, which is an adventure in and of itself! 

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Relying on art shows for a full-time income is a huge risk. Weather is a huge factor—it can make or break an entire week’s income. Not only that, but every area of the country, every state, every person is different, so we never know exactly what to expect as far as how our artwork will be received. We’ve grown accustomed to the risk. As an example, we up and left for Arizona for the winter (a place we’ve never been) and had to face the risk of what shows to do and where to stay.
