Meet Joel Hessler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Hessler.

Hi Joel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My path to where I am now certainly wasn’t a straight line. I gained plenty of valuable knowledge along the way that brought me to where I am now. The final push to my career as a chiropractor was a simple question, “have you ever thought of becoming a chiropractor?” Up to that point, it had never crossed my mind. For some reason, that question burned at me and lead me to shadowing a doctor in his practice. After that visit, I had made up my mind; I was going to be a chiropractor! Again, it wasn’t a straight line. I first earned my massage therapy certificate, which lead me to a therapy job in physical medicine at the hospital. After a while, I transitioned into another role in the same department as a rehab technician. My experiences working alongside the therapists and seeing how patients improved through their interventions was the final step I needed to pursue my career.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As I stated earlier, the path was not a straight line. There was lots of trial and error in finding something I was passionate about. I am so thankful for those experiences as they have helped me to truly understand my patients and their struggles. Those experiences have also made me resilient and better able to handle the unexpected.

As you know, we’re big fans of Clendenan/Hessler Chiropractic. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Our office has continually served Lapeer County for over 47 years. We pride ourselves in caring for the whole patient. What I mean by that is we don’t just treat the complaint, but we address the why and how. We often find that patients just want to be heard as they are so used to just being told what their issues are. This might be the one thing that truly sets our practice apart from others. In addition to general family care, I specialize in sports injuries. I am certified as a chiropractic sports physician through the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians. I am the only chiropractor who holds this certification in Lapeer County. This has afforded me the opportunity to work with many college, high school, and youth athletes; and help them to optimize their performance and recover from injury.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I feel that being honest and hardworking are the most important components to success. I want people to be able to take me for my word, and I also want them to know that I will work tirelessly to achieve the goals I set. There should be no question that those two things with always be true.
