Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Steele.
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my career in the construction world in a place a lot of people don’t expect — as a receptionist at a painting company. But I’ve always been someone who notices inefficiencies, so I began building systems and automating processes to make the office run smoother. Over time, I streamlined my role so much that what used to take 40 hours a week took closer to 10. That ended up opening doors instead of closing them — the company moved me into bigger responsibilities, including managing spray booth processes and eventually estimating for that side of the business.
From there, I helped develop a kitchen refacing and refinishing division, which was a huge learning experience because it combined production, scheduling, customer expectations, and quality control all in one. I eventually became the operations manager, overseeing scheduling, managing the office, coordinating the spray booth, and supporting field crews — basically making sure all the moving parts stayed aligned.
After that, I moved into project management at a local remodeling company to deepen my understanding of general construction, and later I became operations manager at a custom home builder. Every role reinforced the same lesson: successful projects come down to proper planning, strong processes, and clear communication. When those things are missing, projects get stressful fast — timelines slip, budgets creep, and clients lose trust.
That’s what led me to start Elevate Consulting Group. I saw how many small and mid-sized contractors are great at the work itself but don’t always have the time or internal structure to provide the planning, visuals, and communication that today’s clients expect. So I built Elevate to provide that extra layer of support — directly to homeowners and also to contractors who want to elevate their services — through clear plans, 2D/3D visualization, and a process that helps everyone feel confident from concept to completion.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not totally smooth — and honestly I think that’s true for most businesses, especially in construction where every project has a lot of moving parts.
One of the biggest struggles early on was wearing every hat: sales, design, project coordination, client communication, and the behind-the-scenes admin. When you’re the person doing the work and running the business, it’s easy to get stretched thin, and the challenge becomes building systems that keep the quality high without burning out.
Another challenge has been managing timelines and expectations in an industry where so much is outside your control — contractor schedules, lead times on materials, change orders, and the normal surprises that come up once walls are opened. Even when you plan well, you still have to be really proactive about communication so clients and contractors stay aligned.
I’ve also had to learn how to price and position my services confidently, because what we provide isn’t just “pretty renderings” — it’s clarity, planning, and support that prevents costly mistakes. Helping people understand the value of that, and not undercharging for it, was a learning curve.
But those struggles are also what pushed me to double down on what Elevate is built on: clear processes, strong documentation, and education — so projects feel organized and clients feel confident, even when unexpected things happen.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Elevate Consulting Group?
Elevate Consulting Group is a construction consulting and design support company based in Michigan, and our whole mission is to help projects feel clear instead of chaotic. We work with both homeowners and contractors, and we specialize in the planning and visualization side of construction — things like 2D/3D floor plans, renderings, exterior and interior visualizations, and walkthrough-style visuals — along with process support and project guidance so people can make confident decisions before they spend money in the field.
A lot of what we’re known for is taking something that’s hard to picture — a kitchen remodel, a bathroom layout, an addition, even a full new home plan — and turning it into a plan people can actually understand. When clients can see it, they can approve it faster, avoid expensive changes later, and communicate better with their contractor. We also put a big emphasis on education, because most people don’t remodel often and they don’t know what they don’t know. We help them understand options, tradeoffs, timelines, and what decisions need to happen when.
What sets Elevate apart is that we sit in a unique middle ground between design, construction, and operations. I’ve spent my career inside construction businesses — in estimating, project management, and operations — so we’re not just designing something that looks good, we’re thinking through how it gets built, how it affects schedule and budget, and how to keep the process organized. A lot of companies offer one piece of the puzzle, but we’re known for bringing the full picture together: visuals, planning, and a clear process.
We also work closely with small to mid-sized contractors who want to elevate their client experience without having to hire a full internal design team. Many of our contractor relationships are long-term, repeat partnerships, and that’s something I’m really proud of — it tells me we’re making their jobs easier and helping them deliver a better experience to their clients.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is that Elevate stands for professionalism, clarity, and trust. We’re not about rushing decisions or pushing trends — we’re about helping people feel confident in the plan and supported through the process. If readers take anything away, I want them to know that a successful project starts long before demo day, and having the right planning and visualization support can completely change the experience — for homeowners and contractors alike.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I think residential construction and remodeling is going to become a lot more planning- and technology-driven, and clients are going to expect a higher level of clarity before they ever sign a contract.
A few big shifts I see coming:
Visualization will become the standard, not the luxury. Homeowners want to “see it before they build it,” and contractors who can provide clear 2D/3D visuals, walkthroughs, and well-documented plans will win more projects and have fewer costly surprises.
More emphasis on process, communication, and client experience. People are spending too much money to tolerate vague timelines and unclear scope. The contractors who stand out will be the ones who run projects like a professional service business — clear expectations, documented decisions, and consistent updates.
Technology and AI will speed up early-stage design and decision-making. We’ll see faster concept development, quicker iterations, and better tools for turning ideas into buildable plans. The opportunity is huge — but the risk is that people will move too fast without thinking through constructability, budget, or sequencing. The winners will be the teams who combine tech with real construction knowledge.
Lead times, pricing volatility, and labor constraints will keep pushing better planning. Even if supply chains stabilize, clients and builders have learned that you can’t “figure it out as you go” without paying for it. Pre-construction planning and selections will matter more than ever.
Overall, I think the industry is moving toward a more educated client and a more professionalized contractor experience — and I’m excited about that, because Elevate was built around clarity, visualization, and strong processes from day one.
