Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Slisher.
Hi Jessica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
JP and Pals started in February of 2020, but that’s not where my love for dogs began! As a little girl, I grew up owning 2 dachshunds and a mastiff mix. During college, I moved in with my boyfriend (now fiancé) and begged for a dog. After countless hours of asking, we agreed on a dog from a local shelter, and that’s when we adopted JP (short for Jurassic Park). The following year, my friend was fostering a dog from the same shelter, and that’s when we got Ellie (short for Dr. Ellie Satler). In 2019, we bought our first home and decided to start fostering dogs. We fostered nervous dogs, happy dogs, sad dogs, you name it. Most of these dogs didn’t do well in their kennel setting but flourished in our home! We helped over 20 dogs find loving families in a single year. That’s how we came up with the idea to start pet sitting in our home for dogs who don’t react well in a kennel setting. Almost 4 years later, we now offer boarding, daycare, in-home care, and grooming! We currently service over 300 clients, and we couldn’t be more thankful. Tim (my fiancé), Alex (our grooming partner), and I love every dog just as if they were our own!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Pet sitting involves much more than just playing fetch and snuggling. Our expertise is backed by various trainings and courses in dog behavior and psychology. Our approach is tailored. We take the time to understand each dog’s unique routine, behavior, preferences and we adapt to them. I’ve experienced everything from sleepless nights on the couch comforting anxious dogs, early mornings dealing with accidents in the house to the occasional bruise from an overly affectionate 130-pound Golden Retriever. Despite any challenges, knowing that the dogs are well-loved and cared for makes it all worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about JP and Pals?
JP and Pals offers a unique, inclusive pet service experience, specializing in kennel-free boarding, daycare, in-home care, and grooming. Our approach is designed to make every dog feel at home. Here’s what we offer:
• Kennel-Free Boarding & Daycare: Dogs enjoy a comfortable, AirBnB-like environment. They can relax on the couch, watch TV, play in our fenced yard, and enjoy endless belly rubs. Daycare includes mental stimulation through play and basic skill training.
• In-Home Care: For dogs who prefer their own space, we provide house sitting and drop-in visits. This service is tailored for pets that are less sociable or more comfortable in their own environment.
• Stress-Free Grooming: Our grooming services are by appointment only, ensuring a calm, kennel-free experience. We take extra time with each dog, gently introducing them to grooming tools and allowing breaks as needed.
In 2023, we captured hearts and won first place in grooming for the Community Choice Awards (South Bend) and Gold Status for pet sitter in Community Votes (South Bend). Our number one goal is to make every experience positive and every dog happy. Each dog is loved as if they were our own!
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I’d like to give a special shoutout and appreciation to Tim. As my partner in life and business – he does it all. From answering the door to taking the dogs outside at 10 pm, the business wouldn’t be as successful without him!
