Meet Jeana Anderson-Cohen of Petite Acres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeana Anderson-Cohen.

Jeana , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
“Justin and I come from sort of different corners of the business world! I’ve spent my career in marketing, storytelling and community building, including founding aSweatLife, while his background is in operations, growth and real estate. At the end of the day, though, our different strengths have really balanced each other and helped bring Petite Acres to life.

We’ve always been pretty go, go, go, but it was when we finally had a chance to slow down that the idea for Petite Acres really started to take shape. After Justin underwent neck surgery, we decided to take some time to travel and think about what we wanted to do next. We bopped around from Texas to Santa Fe and the South of France, where we were inspired by the thoughtful design, slower pace and genuine hospitality we experienced.

Those trips ultimately shaped so much of the vision for Petite Acres. We started dreaming about creating our own version of that feeling closer to home, and It’s been such a fun way to bring both of our backgrounds and strengths together.” – Jeana Anderson Cohen

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
“There have definitely been struggles, but they’ve all been very much worth it! Neither of us had really been in the wedding or hospitality space before, so there’s definitely been a learning curve. We’re both very detail-oriented, though, so we’ve been able to adapt quickly and really lean on each other’s strengths throughout the process. There are also just so many moving pieces that come with opening a property from the ground up, and we’ve learned a lot along the way.

When it came to actually opening Petite Acres, though, we truly could not have done it without the support of the New Buffalo community. We’re so fortunate to have a community that goes the extra mile to see a local business succeed. From helping us navigate the ins and outs of the area to showing up and spreading the word, everyone has been incredibly welcoming and supportive. That’s been one of the most rewarding parts of the whole experience.” – Justin Cohen

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
“Petite Acres is really about creating a place where people can slow down, gather and just feel good. We have 12 home-style suites across 4.25 acres, but there’s so much more to the property than just the rooms. Take a walk, and you’ll find yurts for disconnecting, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a cold plunge and sauna, plus little details where the South of France meets the Midwest, from the flora to the mantel in Château Aster, which we actually flew in from France. We also have community programming planned throughout the year, like chef long-table dinners, community fitness classes with Prana Life Studios and even a Mahjong event in September.

Justin and I also gave a lot of thought to making sleep a central focus as a part of our wellness amenities here, because you can’t fully recharge without a great night’s sleep. In each room, you’ll find mattresses we selected from Ortho Mattresses, a fifth-generation family-owned company, blackout shades, sound machines and even MoonBrew magnesium gummies.
In the past month and a half, we’re really proud that Petite Acres has become a gathering place for the New Buffalo community as well as a memorable getaway for visitors from around the country. We can’t wait to keep building on that and creating even more reasons for people to come together here.” – Jeana Anderson Cohen

How do you think about happiness?
“Opening Petite Acres has been such an awesome opportunity to show off our home, Southwest Michigan! Recommending our favorite restaurants, cafes, beaches, and more to guests has been really fun, especially as the area continues to grow and welcome new businesses. It’s extra rewarding when guests come back and rave about the great time they had with their family and friends out on the town.

Whether they’re here for a wedding, a getaway or a corporate event, it’s been really special to watch guests build memories they will never forget.” – Justin Cohen
