Hi Jay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to Detroit in 2016 with no connections and no industry experience, but set out early with the mindset of a professional athlete, knowing I could learn anything I set my mind to. In the first year, I won “Rookie of the Year” which came as no surprise, but the biggest honor was winning “Top Producer” by my second year. I doubled my production every year, until I was able to support an admin team and agents to handle the buy-side transactions, and I focus solely on sellers and their success. My systems and processes quickly proved to be useful for not only real estate transactions, but could double serve a new mortgage business and eventually a property management arm. Today I’m the proud owner of four companies, vertically stacked, providing full service for my clients: JTA Realtors, JTA Lending, CRG Property Management, and Detroit Real Estate Experts. Cheers!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My struggles mostly came from finding, retaining, and developing high quality staff. If I could duplicate a few of my best, we would be so much further along, but as we grew, I had to hire team members that didn’t work out, and that always sets you back further than if you had just done the work yourself a little longer. Finding the right people is the most important component in any scaling company.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about JTA Realtors?
We are a full service real estate company, that offers mortgages through JTA Lending, property management through CRG Property Management, and even real estate development though Detroit Real Estate Experts.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
The smell of a wood fire every morning, as my dad would start the day. Our home was heated by a wood burning stove, and it brings back very sweet memories every time I smell cedar wood in a fire.
