Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Smith
Hi Jasmine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my journey in the beauty industry while an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan. Following graduation, I started graduate school in architecture and worked full-time as a fashion merchandiser. I did not expect to work in the beauty industry full-time; however, I quickly learned that I had a passion for connecting with others and helping them feel their best. After several years in the retail industry, I took the risk of leaving my full-time job to begin the process of becoming a salon owner. Although based in Ann Arbor, I opened my first salon in Covington, Kentucky, aiming to highlight the importance of providing an elevated and luxurious customized lash extension experience to my guests.
In just one year, Lash Architecture scaled to a storefront location double the size of our original space. We are currently working on launching education programs for other lash artists looking to elevate their artistry in an Ann Arbor-based studio. At 25 years old, I am very proud of how far I have expanded the business, though it has not been easy. I am thankful for all the support I have received from my friends, family, the community, and the network from the University of Michigan, which has helped me continue to realize my dreams.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
After obtaining the proper licenses and certifications, many more steps are required to become an official salon. Throughout my journey, I had very little understanding of the business management aspect of running a salon, and it involved a lot of trial and error to learn the best management strategies for scaling a service-based business. Marketing, finances, and strategy are all critical components of a growing business. Transitioning from simply providing a service to integrating these components professionally, without much assistance, has been one of the greatest ongoing challenges. At every stage, there is always some obstacle or problem to solve. Currently, hiring staff and strategizing plans for growing the business while still taking clients are the biggest challenges.
Personally, I am also quite a perfectionist, so I struggle with time management because I am constantly reworking things or trying to make improvements. As a business owner, it is sometimes important to complete a task and fine-tune the details later; otherwise, things will never get done. I am learning that everything doesn’t have to be perfect as long as you are willing to figure things out as you go.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a lash artist with over seven years of experience, during which I have had the opportunity to fine-tune my craft. I specialize in applying eyelash extensions that are completely customized to accommodate each client’s unique facial features and eye shape. My work primarily involves creating specialty and advanced lash styles, such as mega volume and wispy lash extension sets that mimic the look of super dramatic strip lashes. This skill can take years to master, and I have received certification from several top educators and companies in these specialty areas throughout my career.
At my salon, I emphasize the importance of attention to detail and technical skills to provide the highest quality service. As an architecture student, I am also known for using innovative technology to enhance the overall lash extension experience. This is very exciting, and I enjoy being one of the first in my area to stay up-to-date and well-educated on the industry’s newest tools and trends.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most is the community. Growing up near the University of Michigan and then attending school there allowed me to truly experience the area’s sense of community. Everyone is so welcoming and helpful, and interacting with goal-oriented and positive people from all demographics showed me how important it is to connect with others. I truly love Michigan and Ann Arbor, but I must say I would love to see more mixed-use buildings and live-work spaces. I believe these would cater more to small business owners and provide more opportunities for small businesses to start up and grow.
