Meet Jasmine Graham of Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Graham.

Hi Jasmine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have loved Art for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I wanted to be everything, everywhere, all at once. I wanted to be an author, an artist, a teacher, an architect, a baby doctor, a secret agent spy, a weather girl and more. But of course as you grow up society does their best to put you in a box.

My high school did NO college prep. When I graduated I went into community college because I didnt know what I wanted to major in. I had a professor who challenged us to take a personality test. Based on the jobs displayed we had to research and write a paper on a job we felt fit us best.

I settled on Broadcast Journalism. I felt that was the closest I could get to an Art degree. It involved writing, photography, videography, radio, podcasting, storytelling and communications.

After graduation with my degree from Wayne State University in December of 2017, I freelanced and worked part time jobs in my field.

Then while photographing my clothing line in the summer of 2019, my friend asked me if I was serious about my photography..I brushed off. Around that same time, I had a friend ask me to be apart of her Artshow. I didn’t know what I would showcase but she was confident in me. I created my first Art installation, “A Journey Through Black Women’s Hair.” During the opening I thought to myself THIS IS IT! THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO DO!

Since then I havent let up. (:

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldnt say its been rough or smooth. Its been challenging due to me having to work, support myself and make this MONEY! Working takes away from my time to create. Also living in Detroit an area that is RICH with talent but lacking in the overwhelming opportunity, we have to create our own opportunities.

I am looking forward to the time when I dont have to work as hard to make money and I can just work hard creating artwork.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a Broadcast Journalist, I am skilled in storytelling through the lens of photography, videography, radio, print, online, podcasting, etc. As an Artist I specialize in Photography, Collage, Mixed Media, Installations, Curation and whatever else calls to me in the moment.

What I am most proud of is that I dont quit. That I uplift others, inspire others and love on others through my artwork.

What sets me apart is how I move through spaces with an open art.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
